10 Week Old Puppy Might Have Mange

Posted by Lisa (North Bay, Ontario CA) on 03/07/2015

I have a 10 week old puppy that we got from a farm. She showed no signs of mange until we got her home that night. I do not have a lot of money and have never had a dog with this issue. I don't want to make her ill but my heart breaks to see her scratching.

Hey Lisa!

There is a saying: when you hear a stampede, think 'cattle' - not a herd of zebras :-)

You have a new puppy who is scratching. There are myriad reasons for this. Is she scratching because she has a shiny new collar and has never worn a collar before?

A bath is your first order, use a human baby shampoo or Dr. Bronner's oil soaps OR even Murphy's wood floor soap - original formula. Follow the bath up with a vinegar rinse - white vinegar 1 part to 10 parts water and use after you rinse the soap out; this will neutralize any soap residue and balance the PH of the skin.

Next watch what you are feeding your new puppy - make sure it is a grain free food, and even if the breeder was feeding X brand if it has grains in the first 5 ingredients it is bad food and you should upgrade to a better diet.

Lastly try alkalizing your puppy's drinking water by adding 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 liter of water and have this be the only drinking water. After 1 week drop it to 1/2 teaspoon per liter for another week, and then 1/4 for yet another week - and then stop, or maintain at 1/4 teaspoon as a maintenance dose.

Start with these simple things and then if the hair starts falling out and you have a puppy with a red rash and is balding, then let's think about mange ;-)
