Wondering About Ashwagandha and Other Remedies for NPH
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) - Ashwagandha Query
Hello
I'm a 72 year old female with NPH, I had a brain tumour removed 3 years ago, a benign meningioma, but unfortunately left me with nph! The good news is I'm alive.....the not so good news is the nph is a nuisance!! I have the common symptoms of very unstable wobbling, urinary incontinence and mild cognitive function problems...focus and concentration!! I had a vp shunt fitted to help with the nph four months after the tumour removal, which helped for a short time, days not weeks.... and a new programmable valve was fitted 12 months ago. Ive had several shunt drains which does help for a few days, but the medical advisors don't recommend this as a permanent remedy due to risks of infection etc.
I'm very very grateful to the NHS and to the Walton Centre staff for their wonderful help care, I'm not ungrateful, but I am impatient on getting some normality back!!
I've started "pool walking" at my local pool, this is proving very successful, I even swam a length, which is easier than walking!! So unless I become a mermaid....im looking for alternatives!!
I have been looking at alternative remedies, ashwagandh being one of them, has anyone got any hints on whether I should try this??
Apologies for whinging on, I do try to be motivated and confident, but the wobbling etc gets exhausting!!!
Thank you for listening...

Hi, since I became a "senior", I started taking ashgawanda powder in my protein smoothie, each day, for more energy, and a little for better sleep. It does seem to help. Several studies evaluated its effects on stress, anxiety, and cognotive abilities. "Significant improvements" were found. For my brain and heart, I use separately or together -- gingko biloba ("may improve blood flow to the brain and reduce dizziness"), hawthorn berries, coenzyme Q10, Vitamin D w/vitamin C, resveratrol (found in grapes), etc. For urinary incontinence, natural helps include -- horsetail, cranberry or pumpkin seed extract. Your Drs have a computer program that can find out what may or may not interfere with your meds. Hope this might help in your search. Enclosing healing prayers too. :-)
