Need Help for Intense Abdominal Pain from Spastic Colon

Posted by Carol (Wi) on 01/16/2021

I have had IBS-d for years. It was never unbearable. Suddenly I'm getting lower left abdominal pain for 1 month now. It's severe pain. I have had a CT scan, blood work, stool tests, and x-ray. All are normal. The ER said that I have a spastic colon. They gave me Bentyl which doesn't help at all.

What can I do? Is there something that helps this? At times it's a 10 on a scale of 1-10.

Stress hormone cortisol from my traumatic childhood was the culprit that was destroying my health. Eric Berg on youtube has tons of gut videos to help you narrow down what might be the cause and he warns what not to do in case you have this or that and then tells you what to do to get out of the storm. I would say eat a plant base diet for a month, maybe just two weeks and I think you will see an almost 100% change for the better.......Eat plenty of beans....Fiber....Two books you can buy on Ebay for little or nothing...."Food over Medicine"....."Super Immunity".....Three books...lol....'"Eat for Health"....You are probably thinking that you could never eat this way, but if you would try it, you would see the difference, and never go back the old way....Good luck...Young lady.....

I have had this intense pain as well and would have gone to the emergency room if not for the fact that I cannot leave the toilet! ACV (Organic Apple Cider Vinegar) is a miracle. When I feel the pain coming on I drink at least two Tablespoons mixed with water. I keep a sixteen ounce water bottle next to my bed with ACV mixed in and drink it at the first sign of an attack. I also will not travel far without it just in case. Now, I drink it everyday as a preventative- half of the bottle first thing in the morning every morning. I believe that if I get too acidic, the spasms come, but the ACV mix brings my ph levels up as well as hydrates me. I have not had a spastic colon since doing this. It's been a couple of months so far.

At first you may have to drink another half bottle an hour later and so on until you're in the clear.

I hope this will work for you as well.

I suffered for years. The only thing that helped me was the Vagus nerve stimulation. You can try to do it yourself. (Energy healing). Imagine yourself being connected to the earth (trough your feet, going down like roots, as far as you can). Imagine a lot of bright energy high above you. Imagine bright lightning going trough the top of your head trough the center of your body. Feel it. Continue for approx. 5 minutes. Imagine a big waterfall of the very cold, bright energy over your body, also approx. 5 min. Here is more info on Vagus. There is a lot more on the Web.

I have heard that ingested cannabis is very effective in relaxing a spastic colon. I don't know how smoking it would work. But if you can grow a small autoflowering plant for your own medical use, it may be worth a try. Or maybe a legally bought oil product may offer the same benefit.

When I get that sharp pain in my lower left abdomen, I take a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 12 oz of purified water. Drink that and you may pass gas or burp, but the pain goes away in 10 to 15 minutes. I hope this helps.

I also suffered from IBS. Begin taking Bacillus Coagulans, which is a probiotic.

Find it at swanson vitamins or online amazon.

Other probiotics help but do not seem to be effective all the time.

Yes, apple cider vinegar can help. Stop the white bread for sure and sugary stuff especially High fructose corn syrup which seems to be in everything coming and going. Smoking and alcohol are taboos. Really--do this and survive for better days.

Have you been checked to see if you have diverticulitis? If you have pain in your lower left side, that is one of the signs of diverticulitis.

That sounds really painful. I have Diverticulitis and sometimes suffer with a really bad pain in lower left abdomen which I find is triggered by too many cabs and sugar. It got so bad I couldn't raise my left leg to climb the stairs. I took Nux Vomica - a homeopathic remedy - the strength I used was 30. I took one every hour for 3 hours till the pain started to lessen. Then 1 every 3 hours till I'd had 6 that day. The pains was very much reduced and the Nux Vomica did cause a bowel movement which also helped relieve the dragging, tearing pain.

The next day I took 1 tablet every 2 hours and by 3 o'clock in the afternoon the pain was gone. Nux Vomica is the go-to homeopathic remedy for IBS and other gas and toxin related pains and bloating. I've used Homeopathy for over 40 years and it's very safe and very effective. I hope it helps. Good luck. Also maybe try a Low Fodmap diet. You can find Dr Sue Shepherds book on it. She's the head of Gastroenterology at Monash university in Melbourne Australia. It's about malabsorption of certain sugars like lactose, fructose etc in the small intestine which then end up undigested in the large intestine where they rot and give off gas and toxins that cause the painful inflammation in the Colon etc. It helps a lot.

I have intermittent gastric issues from surgery decades ago..not enough gastric enzymes, spastic issues also can be controlled without drugs....could be the core of this.. Buttermilk could assist with adding some healthy cultures. a 1/2 cup with each meal or prior to the meal... get the Bulgarian buttermilk.. IF YOU are NOT lactose/milk intolerant.

Herbal I use is "Everlasting", whole herb, I use 12 leaves and 2"stem.( whole plant is effective..) I prepare by..Put herbs n cup, pour 4 oz very warm but not boiling-water over it, add in a peppermint tea bag or orange spice tea bag.. allow to steep at least 30 min.. Divide into 2 servings.. use one.. by sipping over 30-45 mn.. can be iced or heated on stove.. DO NOT MICROWAVE. will destroy enzymes..wait hours and if try the other half if symptoms are not quite gone... I use this every 2nd or 3rd day.( It also helps with lactose/milk intoerance should I get a food item that has milk.) ..after symptoms are controlled I have found this herb to stop both diarrhea and constipation,

It is restorative with enzymes and other elements the intestines require. In search bar I use Duck duck go... put in name of The Southern Herbalist, Darryl Patton and Rabbit tobacco...( is not a true tobacco but is the nick name for it.).He has a very good article on it and the anaysis of it. Is a common herb in the southeast..

I had severe pain there some time ago too. I would wake with it and be doubled over trying not to breathe it was so bad. In desperation, I used a needless syringe and squirted 5ml of Colloidal Silver up the rectum. To my surprise it never came back out and pain subsided quickly. I decided to follow this as a regime every day for a week and it only returned once when I did it again and it's been completely gone now for years. My local butcher said he had Diverticulitis so I told him how I got rid of mine and he did it. He couldn't believe it as he'd tried all the medical pathways. The silver insufflation worked for him too. Anything inserted rectally goes directly to the colon and Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic so it corrects overgrowths of bacteria that may be producing too much gas.

I literally feel your pain and have for decades now due to a rather long list of autoimmune and 'structural' problems with my gut. Surgeon says I was born with 'bad guts' but I've found my own ways of dealing. Bentyl did nothing for me either. Nor did the phenobarb a doctor prescribed for me when I was a mere 18, for acute abdominal pain that came and went. It had to be psychological, ya know...sarcasm intentional there. For me: avoid gluten/wheat due to Celiac disease w/Barrett's esophogus (healed now). Use ACV w/raw honey for a soothing and relaxing drink. Very healing. Use ginger- or ginger-and-lemon tea rather than coffee most of the time. Ginger has 'saved my life' a lot of times. And good pre- and probiotics. I'm trying more and more to use nutrition as my medicine and it's working better than those formerly tried meds...and there were a lot of them. Since you've undergone what seems like a pretty thorough workup, diverticulitis is probably not an issue for you now because it would have visualized on a CT or even xray most likely, along with an elevated white blood cell count and fever of some degree. And the vitamin D for sure; it'll help the C work better and helps with cell permeability...our body can just work better when it has the right 'food' inside it.

I have had IBS for years, with lower left abdominal pain, and extreme lower bowel cramps which left me in agony on the toilet. A doctor recommended I use an antispasmodic over the counter tablet called Buscopan, hyoscine butylbromide, which comes from the Duboisia plant. Apparently used in ayurvedic medicine, I have found it extremely helpful for years, with no side effects apart from a bit of a dry mouth. It literally saved my life and allowed me to keep working. I only take it when necessary, not all the time.

I have had occasions also of intense abdominal pain, and I sometimes still do, and what really helps me is a low dose of a benzodiazepine med: there are many, with different half-lifes and times to onset, but in the hospital once a single dose of Ativan (lorazepam) resolved my problem. With this sort of pain, the anxiety levels rocket up, too, and this class of drugs is excellent at addressing that very quickly and effectively. You could ask your MD if you could try one of this class of meds. Best wishes.

If you have a good body massager, thoroughly massage the abdominal area watching a youtube video by a physical therapist. It starts at the ascending colon; moves to the transverse and to the descending colon (just as the waste products move with peristalsis) It helps the fecal material move down and eases the pain.

For the spasticity of the intestines, topical magnesium helps. Remember that calcium helps muscles to contract, magnesium helps them to relax. I used topical magnesium, along with barley water and kefir, to ease and settle down his spastic colon.

Massage magnesium oil or m. lotion or m. gel into your torso, arms and legs. It goes into circulation and eases the spasms. You can do this up to once daily. Alternatively, soak for 30 minutes in a bathtub of warm to hot water to which was added a cup of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). Don't take oral magnesium if your colon is spastic, as it may have a laxative effect and make the problem worse. If you have a kidney problem, don't take magnesium without consulting your doctor, because magnesium is cleared through the kidneys.

I have had alternating IBS D/C since I was 12 (am now 65). The only thing that consistently helped me was drinking fiber such as psyllium or acacia powder. Later in life I learned how peppermint (for cramps) and fennel (for gas and bloating) can help. A good resource is this site: https://www.helpforibs.com/

You don't have to use her brand of products, and it has tons of useful Information.

I had IBS for 20 or so years. It disappeared beautifully with prayers of my good friends and myself. I eliminated dairy and caffeine per orders of my gastroenterologist. He also ordered against alcohol but I rarely drink any. He also ordered over the counter Fibercon fiber supplement twice daily and Florastor probiotic twice daily. I've successfully used the Kroger equivalents of these.

Two months ago, my grandson had the same identical symptoms, lab work, cat scan, x-rays and colonoscopy that you describe in your post. He, too was diagnosed two years ago as having IBS. His doctor would prescribed medication that was not helping him and he was getting worst.

After this recent bout with inflammation in his digestive system I was able to convince him to take the following supplements,

1/4 tsp of baking soda in 6 oz of purified water after every meal.

One to two capsules of NF peppermint and oregano oil capsules before each meal.

He also took 1/2 tsp of Magnesium Citrate in 8 oz of purified water.

Although he was already a water drinker I encouraged him to really drink more water.

After two weeks of taking all of the above supplements he is a different person. He says I cured him!!! I believe he possibly had bacteria in his intestines and taking antibiotics leads to other problems.

One thing that I should mention is that he is lactose intolerant, he has been all of his life but we have addressed and changed his diet to eliminate diary products.

I am a huge fan of Earth Clinic and like many of you I will try a natural remedy for any health issue first. Oil of oregano is my number one source for staying healthy.

Good luck, I hope this information will help you.

I have IBSd too. The pain is from the pyloric slpinter. If you massage the painful spot you can ease the pain. That spincter is supposed to open and close at the appropriate time to release food to another level of digestion so sometimes it supposed to be open and sometimes it's supposed to be closed, depending on what part of the digestion cycle you're in.

I found all this out from a naturopathic chiropractor. She showed me how to massage it and also there is a trigger point on the shoulder that relieves the pain in the sphincter. (you may find this info on utube.) Also there are diet things you can do, like Mastic gum. It kills h.pylori germs in the stomach.

Two ways to stop it, go on a vegetable diet for 6 weeks your colon will heal, if you can't do a special diet ,take small amounts of cayenne powder each day to heal you up until you can go on your special 6 week diet.
