Dog With Anal Gland Issues

My 12 yr old bishon/maltese recently started leaking a brownish foul liquid from his anus. He's never had this problem. I've tried to express the glands but I still have to clean him several times a day. Bowel movements are solid. I did add a topper to his food-Fresh Pet with grain and sweet potato. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary.

Thank you so much for replying! Yes it does help. I think I'll have to take him in for internal vs external.
