Gum Near Root Canal Turned Black, Should I Pull the Tooth?

I had a root canal done 12 years ago. It has a gold half cal on too. A small area around the tooth near the gum is black. I have read that root canals are really unhealthy. Should I have the tooth pulled? It might be slightly visible when I smile. And a bridge costs a fortune to do. I'm not sick just picked up weight but this could be just life, and Ive had a nodular basal cell carcinoma on my nose. Any comments welcome.
