Best Veggie Juices for IBS-D?

Posted by Namaw (Al) on 02/19/2016

For my ibs-d, I am often told to start juicing. So now I've bought a juicer--how do I go about it? Are some vegs better than others for my problem? Fruits seem to bother me, so I'll avoid those at least at first (maybe an apple or grape for sweetness, but not a high percentage). I hear that cabbage is good for gastro issues, just juice it straight up? I've read thru the juicing posts, but I don't want to start off badly and then give it up. Thanks.

By the way, my DH is doing very well--the last lung procedure seems to have worked and he's gaining strength. Has a sweet tooth, tho, so gotta keep him on the nutrition straight and narrow. Thanks for all the prayers and advice.

Dear Namaw,

So happy that your husband is doing so well! And good for you for getting a juicer.

I would start off very slowly with juicing to see how different vegetables/fruits do for you.

The juice is so concentrated with nutrients. I know that, for example, even juicing one whole beet can give someone a serious detox reaction.

My personal favorite thing to juice is carrot. It ends up pretty sweet. (Maybe it would satisfy your husbands sweet tooth?) It makes a nice "base" for a juice. For example, I might juice 5-10 carrots and add 1-2 stalks of celery. You could add a leaf or two of cabbage or kale.

It might be best to start with just one thing. Like carrot. Drink just 1-2 tablespoons at first. See how it does for you and increase slowly. If that all suits, add something else to the juice. Maybe cabbage or celery.

You can refrigerate (12-24 hours) or freeze what you don't use right away. While fresh juiced is ideal, this will be easier while you are getting used to it all.

Have you ever tried turmeric for you ibs? I think it is pretty easy to disguise in fresh juice. (My kids may disagree.) 1/4 teaspoon at first.

I also usually put a pinch of salt in my vegetable juices. A splash of apple cider vinegar, maybe, too.

The possibilities are really endless, based on what you like, what suits your digestion, what is available, etc. If you end up juicing a lot of carrots, Publix used to have the best deal on a 25 pound bag of organic carrots. (I haven't compared prices in a while, though.)

Would love to hear what you try.

Hello Mama to Many. I have a question. When you talked about juicing and taking it gradually (starting with just carrots at first and then adding other things), I was told to stay away from cabbage and any thing from the cabbage family, ie: broccoli, cauliflower, etc. because these are very gassy veggies and will flare up the IBS. Just wondering if cabbage is a good thing. I know when I have eaten that or broccoli, etc. I would have a flare up.

If a particular vegetable does not suit you, then I would not add it to the juice. If raw vegetables in general do not agree with you, you might not want to try this remedy either.

If you try it for IBS-D, do start out with a very small amount - even just a tablespoon to see if it suits you.

Other things to consider if this doesn't suit you would be Essiac Tea or activated charcoal powder.

I hope you find the remedy that works for you!
