Can Anything Help Dog Who Leaks Urine Constantly

Posted by Valarie (Wi, US) on 04/24/2015

Hi I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot but I have a question. My Boxer (female who is now 6 years old) has been leaking urine ever since she got fixed which was about 3 years ago. she will drink and drink...and then go lay down and there is a huge puddle where she lays. its not just a drip here and their , its a mess! My husband is getting fed up with it after we found her on our new bed and it was soaked. I'm heartbroken because I know its not her fault. I called a few vets but they dont know what it is. I tried home remedies and those do'nt seem to help. Any suggestions? sSe is a sweet girl and she eats, plays and everything else is normal, shes very healthy, she will just drink like a fish with no water and almost, leak it ALL out of her system. I called the place where she got fixed and thought maybe they nicked her bladder but they denied they did anything wrong. now she has to wear a diaper with a childs size 6 diaper on because she will leak All the way through it. Any advice or help would be great and much appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

Hey Valerie!

What you are describing to me sounds like one of two things: urinary spay incontinence/spay incontinence - this condition is a known side effect for spayed females, however not all females develop this condition, and/or diabetes. I am flabbergasted that the vets you called did not know about this or mention these possibilities, but perhaps you only spoke to the receptionists who IMHO offer very little helpful advice over the phone.

You should study up and google "spay incontinence" and read up on it. There are homeopathic and herbal remedies that may apply, and there are vet prescribed hormone supplements that are very effective for most dogs. The diabetes diagnosis will require some tests but a proper diagnosis is needed to determine your next steps in treating your girl.

Good luck and please report back!

Hi Valerie - my Lab had the same problem for the last few years. Our vet put her on stibestrol and it cleared up within a week. After that she needed one pill a week to maintain. Chance's problem was exactly what Theresa said, spay incontinence. It's not a natural remedy but certainly fixed the problem. Good luck!
