Cannot Digest Calcium Supplements and Lactose Intolerant

Posted by Denise (California) on 06/11/2022

Dear Art S. And others,

I cannot digest calcium supplements by mouth & I am lactose intolerant. How can I get sufficient calcium? Some people suggest eating tofu but I read that high-calcium tofu is made with a type of calcium that is not healthy. Can you comment on this?

I love using transdermal magnesium, it really relaxes my muscles, but I'm concerned that it may be making my calcium-magnesium balance off-kilter. How do others deal with this?

Thank you, Denise

Denise,

There are quite a few non-dairy foods that have higher calcium content that should allow you to get enough calcium without having to deal with lactose intolerance :

1. Almonds

2. Kale / Seaweed

3. Broccoli

4. Dark green leafy vegetables

5. Orange juice with added calcium

6. Blackstrap molasses

7. Sardines

8. Salmon

9. Lactose free milk

10. Beans

Another consideration is that some people who are lactose intolerant are able to consume dairy products if they use Lactase Enzyme. Here is a link to a typical product :
