Cat Skin Problems With Fur Loss on Flanks

Posted by Andy (Peconic, New York) on 02/26/2017

Hi, I have a cat named Kitty she is 23 years old and was in good shape but in the last month she lost a lot of hair in her flanks and especially rear legs. Her nice black hair is turning greyish to whitish snf has thinned out quite rapidly it seems. Her ears and eyes are ok I think. She is scratching a lot. I checked her skin and she has these bumpy scabs. There were many on her back and neck. I scratched them off a week ago little by little and now not as bad but they come back in places especially neck and back. Gave her a bath. I am thinking she may have mange but not sure. Any Idea what it could be. I will start the Hydrogen peroxide and borax in meantime.

Thanks, Andy

Hey Andy,

The hair loss could be the result of many things. Fleas will cause the type of reaction you are seeing and also a thyroid deficiency will cause hair loss on the flanks as well, as well as mineral and dietary deficiencies. At this great age a meat based top of the line diet would be my choice for this senior. At 23 years of age you have an antique kitty and it would not hurt to see the vet for a full blood panel and to check out the thyroid. I will also say if you do see the vet to not vaccinate -nothing, zip, nada - make the vet work for you via blood tests and if they insist on vaccinating call the next vet until you find one that you can work with.
