Cat with One Kidney Struggling with Resistant Strain of Bladder Infections

Posted by Tab (Raleigh, Nc) on 07/08/2015

I'm desperate. Maggie was born with one kidney, and now it's being impacted due to recurrent UTIs. I think her now dilute urine is making them happen more often, and this most recent one is MRSP (methicillin resistant staphylococcus pseudintermedius). I was giving her UT treats (cranberry, d-mannose, etc.) but she still got another one just months after the last treatment (before it showed up as a resistant strain). The drug she was just prescribed is sulphamethoxezole (sp? e.g. Bactrim), but I couldn't get the first dose in her last night. I've now learned of some bad side-effects, and I'm scared to use it. But scared to NOT use it, too. Can a true bacterial infection, especially a resistant variety, be cured by natural means? Thought I'd search around before calling the vet to see if the med could be compounded into something she will take (she foamed at the mouth for 15 mins--I tried using a gel cap and pill-shooting it in, but that cat turns into a 100-lb feral cat, and I've never successfully gotten a pill into her--that can't be hidden in food, which this one can't because of its taste).

Thanks for any suggestions, etc.

Hey Tab!

I am sorry to hear about Maggie's urinary troubles. Remedies that come to mind are sea salt and black seed oil.

Now, sea salt will make Maggie vomit if you try to get a heaping teaspoon full down in one go. What you might try is giving her 1/4 teaspoon in some soft food and dose that a couple times throughout the day. Do NOT give her lots of water during this time - the idea is to let the salt concentrate in her bladder where the bacteria are. So see if she will take sea salt spiked wet food and monitor the results.

Next, black seed oil is a good antimicrobial agent - you would dose 1/2 to 1 teaspoon into the wet food; this remedy will take time to work, so will not knock out the UTI in a pinch as the sea salt remedy does -the black seed oil will in the long term help prevent a recurrence.

So sorry to hear of Maggie's difficulties. I had a kitty, McGee, (had to change the name from Maggie, when certain physical attributes became apparent! ) with similar problem plus polycystic remaining kidney. His 6 month prognosis fortunately extended to 5 years with lots of love and care and colloidal silver. A kitty, I have now is prone to uti's also. Adding about a tablespoon of colloidal silver to a pint of fresh drinking water for a few days stops the problem almost immediately if given at the first sign of trouble. All my kitties get this treated water about twice a month just for preventative purposes and seemingly have no aversion to drinking it. (Good for their teeth too) All the best to you and Maggie.
