Cat With Severe Allergies Licking Fur Off

Posted by Tima (Toronto, Canada) on 06/08/2018

Hi. My 7 year old Tuxedo cat (a little over weight) seems to have some kind of allergies. All this time I thought it was food related, but it seems to get worse in summer. He licks himself untill all the hair on his legs, arms and lower belly are gone.

I don't know what to do. Vet puts him on prednisone. Doesn't really seem to help much. He has bad breath sometimes too. He feels the need to groom himself even though it's not necessary, thereby removing all the hair. It's definitely worse in the summer. By winter time for a few months he stops long enough to let the hair grow back...but then starts again...

Can you give me some simple, effective home remedy? I was thinking of trying borax but was scared I'd kill him!

Please respond as soon as possible.

Thank you this awesome website! Please keep up the great work!

Read through this earthclinic link about what other cat owners have done to help their cats' allergies. One suggestion is to add a small amount of organic Apple Cider Vinegar (with "the mother") to your cat's food every time you feed him. https://www.earthclinic.com/pets/allergies.html

Hey Tima,

You might consider dosing your cat with CBD oil. Please google it and read all about it. You may find this helps reduce your cats allergies/reduce his reactivity to whatever allergen is affecting him/relax him so he does not over groom. There can be tummy upset if the dose is wrong, so you have to dose carefully, but it can do wonders for some pets.
