Help Needed for 11 Year Old With Possible Strep/Scarlet Fever

Posted by Charo (Malaga) on 01/04/2023

My son has pain in his throat, fever at night, and his tongue is white. His uvula is huge. I'm suspecting strep. Have tried Manuka honey, grapefruit seed extract, thyme, licorice tea, silver and last night even cayenne. It's not getting better and it seems like it's turning into scarlet fever. His tongue is red on the sides and swollen and under his tongue there are red sores and swollen as well. He had hard time swallowing and I'm worried sick. He has a doctor's appointment tomorrow but he has in his 11 years never gotten antibiotics and I would love to keep it that way. Here it's given as candy. It's getting worse so I'm desperate. Any other tips??

Dear Charo,

I, too, avoid antibiotics for my children as much as possible, but have used them at times. This would be one of those times. You have tried many things and he is getting worse. Antibiotics are overused, but they do save lives and prevent complications from serious diseases. Scarlet fever can cause serious long-term health problems.

I agree. I knew they were going to prescribe them but felt it necessary this time. He hasn't been at the doctor since he was 5, always managed to fix it all naturally so I was starting to beat myself up as to what I was doing wrong.. But when it goes too far and the natural things don't work I guess we should be grateful that we have antibiotics as a tool too.. I thought he seemed better today, less pain when swallowing and less swollen uvula but the doctor compared with the photo from yesterday and said it was much worse so we are going to do this, loaded with probiotics? A lot of phlegm, infection and throat almost completely closed off so hold your thumbs! She prescribed NAC too so I guess she is not clueless? Thank you for reassurance, mum guilt and all you know?

Sometimes you need antibiotics and it sounds like now is that time.

You can also use Lugols iodine as a gargle/ rinse, painted topically on the throat, and drink several drops.

Recently, the only thing that has helped our family when adults and kids are sick (the past 4 times) is ivermectin. This last time we had the flu or maybe RSv, I don't know. But after 2 weeks of the usual supplements we take, things were still lingering and I could get rid of the sore throat. Ivermectin (0.4 mg per kg of body weight, once a day for 5 days) completely got everyone well within a couple of days.

Antibiotics aren't the end of the world if you go that route. Just load him up on probiotics afterwards.

Have done iodine painting and had him gargle with iodine mouthwash 7-8 times a day. No help there either, unfortunately. Ivermectin is not available here.

And yes, already started him on probiotics. Unfortunately it seems like we will have to go antibiotics route but like you said, it's not the end of the world hopefully!

Hi, I find the best oil to help any and all throat issues is Oil of Oregano..

A few drops and I get relief, it will be hot for a bit but if you swallow it will work faster. As needed, Always keep on hand.

Goodness please, no oregano essential oil straight in a child's mouth.

Always try on yourself remedies you want to give your child before giving it to them.

Gargled with oil of oregano and coconut oil. He said it burned a lot and didn't help at all. Tried twice and abandoned it when we saw it wasn't working.Has extremely sensitive stomach so can't take it eternally, last time it caused extreme pain for over a week.

I had scarlet fever as a child and the throat pain is like swallowing razors. Scarlet Fever also has stomach rash. I say go with antibiotics!

No rash, just very white and red tongue day before yesterday. Today I filed the prescription (went late yesterday) but he is so much better today and has almost no pain and no fever but phlegm and talks muffled. It has been hell for him but now he is almost back to normal. I am afraid of giving him antibiotics because of years long battle with his stomach but also don't want to risk rheumatic fever. Unsure if it can turn into it after the fever is down, so still thinking and dreading the decision (or lack thereof).

Colloidal Silver is what is needed here. Get a big bottle and take a small shotglass of it every 1/2hr, till the worst of the pain is gone. Then 3x or 4x a day after that until it is gone.

Manuka Honey will also help with the sore throat, it's amazing stuff.

Both of these will seriously help.

Healing thoughts to the little fella.

I did, he both drank it and I sprayed it, we went through a full spray bottle and a good chunk of the big one. I gave him almost half of jar of 24+ UMF Manuka honey. I really went full force with everything and nothing really worked. We went to the doctor and he got NAC and antibiotics but I have just filled the prescription and am kind of having hard time deciding. His pain has diminished and his fever is gone but he still has a lot of phlegm and can not talk normally. The only thing that seems to have worked is Manuka a little bit and Strepsils but then we just started last night. I'm literally sitting here with antibiotics and thinking If I should wake him up and give them or not…

Reporting back. Was at the doctors and got prescriptions on penicillin. I am allergic to it and no idea if he is. He is allergic to mold. I mentioned it but she didn't care much just said he had to take it or he will develop rheumatic fever. Today he is way better but still a lot of phlegm and some pain but no fever. I called her and she said he had to take it regardless again because of rheumatic fever. I'm really unsure about what to do. He seems to be over the worst but I don't want to risk him getting something even worse. Any thoughts?

Have you considered Colloidal Silver? If you want some info on it fighting infections of all kinds, go to The Silver Edge click on articles. Quite impressive! I haven't been sick since Nov 2019. I use to get a chest cold every year now I'm never sick since I started taking colloidal silver. I take 10 ppms a dropper full when I feel run down and it zaps it . I bought the Silver Edge machine to make myself, never have regretted it! I think every family should have one .Hope this helps .

Like I wrote, gave him a lot of silver and no improvement at all. Sprayed his throat and let him drink. I always have Manuka and silver and GSE at home but nothing..

Use alternating icy cold and hot compresses for three times maybe every 3 to 4 hours apart. Also, steep crushed garlic (3 cloves) and apple cider vinegar (1/2 cup) for at least a half day and give half a teaspoon dosage every three hours. Used these successfully to clear strep throat in family members. Sometimes you have to use pain relievers if the person is really uncomfortable. I hope your son feels better soon.

I recently got a sore throat. I mixed 1/8 tsp table salt with 8 oz warm water and drank it. My sore throat pain was cut in half. I ate a small piece of raw garlic and the sore throat went away completely. The germs of a sore throat bacteria or virus need to be killed immediately at the start of a sore throat or the germs will replicate quickly. Here is additional information

Woke up with a sore throat and cough, yesterday, chewed some honeycomb and that was that. I suspect the sore throat and cough were reactions from my iodine adventures but, nevertheless, popped some honeycomb in my mouth, chewed on it for about a minute, and both the sore throat and cough were gone. I think it's like "oil pulling" or the "sugar cure for the common cold", drawing out infected mucous. Except, it's way better than oil-pulling. Plus, not gross. I've done it with sugar, salt, vinegar and honeycomb. Honeycomb wins, hands down. Second - I would have to say, goes to salt. It doesn't take much. You just put a couple pinches on your tongue and swish and sort of chew on your tongue to get the salivary glands going and it's only about a minute before it starts pulling out that awful, indigestible sort of mucous. Spit it out and do it again. Actually, I would imagine it would work with just about anything that would activate the salivary glands...including saliva, itself. Though it takes longer. Swish and chew on it until the mucous starts, spit it out, repeat.

When I did it just to see what it's like, I didn't get much but could feel the mucous I was getting coming down from the sinuses while, with the sore throat and cough, it was definitely coming up from the respiratory tract and the throat.
