Help Needed for Chronic Pancreatitis in Small Dog

Posted by Rosemary (Florida Panhandle ) on 07/04/2017 2 posts

My 11 year old chihuahua has had two episodes of acute pancreatitis 9 months apart. The first one was quite severe. My concern now is how to keep her from suffering and or having another attack that requires hospitalization. The vet wants me to feed her one of the prescription diet from Hills or Royal Canin. I DO NOT want to feed that. So he said I could feed her half of a 3 ounce can of Natures Variety small breed chicken formula mixed with white rice made with chicken broth that has no salt or onion powder twice a day. And also give a quarter of a tablet of Pepcid once or twice a day. I am concerned about giving the Pepcid on a regular basis.

So yesterday I omitted the Pepcid and she woke me up about 3 am to go out and eat grass. She hadn't been doing that when on the Pepcid. I also give her a digestive enzyme from Dr Becker's website and Gut Sense from Dr Peter Dobias website. I haven't been real regular with the probiotic and enzymes lately but think I should.

Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with this?

Hello Rosemary,

I have not had a dog with a chronic pancreatic issue. That said I ask a friend who did, and she dosed Pepcid long term and had zero issues with using the Pepcid long term. I also tried searching for information about long term issues with Pepcid and found nothing. If you have something to share about Pepcid being bad for long term use, please share - sources if you have them would be a plus. If this were my dog and the Pepcid made a difference I would use it.
