DIY Colloidal Silver Turning Brown - What's Causing This?

Posted by Vicki (Fanø, Denmark) on 03/08/2025

Hi I have made Colloidal silver for mere than 5 years, but all of a sudden my batch turns brown.

Any suggestions or advice on what is happening?

Hi Vicki,

You don't say what parts per million (PPM) you were making your batch.

If your batch was yellow before it became brown, this is a natural color progression from yellow to brown to dark brown as the PPM increase above approximately 80 PPM. If it wasn't yellow before it became brown, it may indicate agglomeration of the particles.

If you dilute a small portion of the brown batch slowly with distilled water and it turns yellow/yellowish, this would be normal. If it doesn't turn yellow, then the batch has possibly agglomerated, with the larger particles causing the darker color.

If you leave the batch for a few days and it forms sediment at the bottom, agglomeration likely has caused the particles to grow too large to be able to remain in suspension.
