Cyst on Cat's Gum Where Tooth Was Removed

Posted by C. Benson (Galion, Ohio ) on 10/23/2021

My 14 year old cat had an infected tooth removed and there is still a cyst in the gum where it was removed. I've been treating it with turmeric and castor oil twice a day but I'm thinking this may be a different kind of cyst than those on the body and might not respond to this. I'm really worried and think maybe I should take her back to the vet and have the cyst drain. Has anyone else had this kind of problem if so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wrote a post earlier about treating a gum cyst on my cat princess with DMSO, Turmeric and castor oil. It's been a week and instead of looking better it seems bigger. If anyone has done this treatment or thinks I should be using something else please let me know. I'm very worried and if it doesn't look better soon I'm going to take her back to the vet. Any help would really be appreciated. I'm sure everyone who comments here understands how worrying this can be.

Hi Carol,

I have been reading your posts and didn't want to comment in case you found something that was working. I doubt that what happened to my 17 year old cat, Pete, is what is going on with your cat, but will mention this because it sounds similar.

Our cat was always very healthy and well, but one day I noticed he was having trouble eating. I tried various foods, but he was really struggling with something, so I took him to the vet. He took bloodwork and said Pete had an infected tooth, but that we should hold off until I had given him antibiotics for a week before the extraction. We waited about five days, but I was very concerned because he was unable to eat anything at all. We contacted the vet and it was decided to have his tooth pulled the next day. He did well and we brought him home. However, he continued to be unable to eat, so I bought some fresh meat at the grocery store (not chicken, because it would be raw) and put it in the blender with some water. I got different kinds of meat for variety.

He did eat some of this, but was still struggling with pain. He couldn't eat any cat food. I called the vet to let him know and he said to just give it some time. After a little less than a week, I thought he should be seen again and took him in. The vet took one look at the tooth and said, “Your cat has cancer. I wish I had seen that when I operated. Radiation will only postpone this, and he will be ill.” I took him home and we puréed all his meat and he ate enough to get by for a couple of weeks to a month. We lost him shortly after that. I am only posting this because I never thought this could happen when I had taken him in and gotten the tooth removed. I hope you will find some antibiotics will heal your cat. I also wish I had known that antiparasitics (fenbendazole) can cure cancer, and I would have given him those. I am so sorry for what the pet and owners suffer when their dearly loved pets are ill. I hope your cat turns the corner and you have many wonderful years to share still. Best wishes for a full recovery.

Dear RSW, so sorry to hear about your loss. I know how difficult it is. You did a wonderful job of taking care of him before he had to pass.

My cat Princess seems to be doing much better as I took her to the vet again and she cleaned out the where the tooth had been removed, again and injected some antibiotics. So glad I did because Princess immediately seemed to feel better and did eat more on her own than she had been. The cyst is not cancerous and it looks much smaller and even though she is eating some on her own, it's just not enough to gain weight or keep what she has gained. I'm syringe feeding her twice a day and that plus what she does eat seems to be working.

I'm just treating the cyst with coconut oil after each feeding and I hate that it's still there but Princess has such a small mouth and tiny gum line I don't know how the cyst could be removed and not take most of her gum. It would be very drastic. I don't think I could do that to her even if it had been cancerous. It's so hard to know what to do isn't it?

Thanks for posting about your kitty and I again I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hi Carol,

I am so happy to hear that Princess is doing better and is making progress with her gum issue. What a relief that must be, and she is fortunate to have such a caring and loving caretaker and friend. This news has just made my day! I am so happy she is doing well. Thank you for your kind words.
