Dog Has Yellow Dandruff Could It Be A Yeast Infection

My dog has yellow type dandruff. Is this possibly a yeast infection? She's always scratching herself and chewing at her paws. Would like any help I can get.

Hey Barbara!

It could be a yeast infection. It might also be allergies or diet related.

First things first: read the ingredient label on your dog food; if the first 5 ingredients contain grain or corn, you need to upgrade the groceries to a grain free kibble. Changing the diet can do wonders, particularly for dogs who have grain or corn allergies.

Next, try alkalizing your dog's drinking water. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda into 1 liter of drinking water and have this be the only drinking water your dog can have. After 7 days change the dose to 1/2 teaspoon and do this for another week, and follow this up for a 3rd week with 1/4 teaspoon dose of baking soda. You can keep your dog on the 1/4 teaspoon baking soda to 1 liter water as a maintenance dose, or stop and give a break and resume with the full dose at the first sign of itching or dandruff.

Yeasty dogs tend to smell - they smell funky. If your dog smells funky then it could be systemic yeast causing the dandruff, in which case you could consider Ted's Borax protocol for pets along with a bath as needed in Ted's Mange Remedy or Ted's anti-fungal/anti-staph solution.

Good luck and report back!
