Dog is Licking Apple Cider Vinegar Off His Skin

Posted by Aimzon (Be) on 08/19/2015

Ok, I HAVE put the ACV on my dogs raw, gnawed arms and he shivers and then proceeds to obsessively lick it off! Everyone says how great it is, but surely if they are licking it off too! Is it still helpful to put it on...hoping that some of it sinks in before it's all licked off? This is driving us all nuts! Thanks for any help.

It should not harm your dog to lick it off, but he is probably doing that because it is irritating him. Apple Cider Vinegar should be diluted with at least equal parts of water before applying to the skin.

If he licks it off when diluted, you could dilute a little more.

Hey Aimzon!

*WHY* are your dog's arms raw and gnawed on? If you are pouring undilutedACV on raw, open sores then your dog is shivering in pain and licking the ACV off because he is trying to stop the ACV from stinging the open sores.

You need to figure out why your dog is chewing himself raw. Does he live outside in the grass? He might be allergic to the grass or pollens or it could be flea bites. What kind of food are you feeding him? Food that contains grains and corn can cause all kinds of skin problems. You need to start with the food first - make sure you are feeding a quality food and not the cheapest stuff on the shelf.

Next, you might try alkalizing the water by adding baking soda. Try 1 teaspoon of baking soda into 1/2 liter of water; if he won't drink it because it tastes strange, start with 1/2 teaspoon baking soda into 1 liter of water and increase the dose every 4 days until you are at 2 teaspoons per liter - or as close to that as he will tolerate. Have him drink that for 3 weeks and then drop it down to 1/2 teaspoon per liter of water as a maintenance dose.

Also try a bath. Bathe the entire dog and not just the sore parts. Use Ted's Mange Remedy and follow the directions, especially where you keep him saturated with the solution by wetting him with it again and again for 10 full minutes.

Your dog very well may have a staph infection on his skin; you can try Ted's remedy for staph, along with adding borax to the water. But first try the above - changing the diet, alkalizing the water for several weeks and bathing regularly in Ted's remedy - and then report back.

I have bathed, changed her diet, no chicken no glutes, and used diluted ACV and she still licks it off. I was going to try Dinovite next. She has just finished her 2 prescription from the vet, amoxicillin and apoquel. What does she need if she has staph infection. She just got off amoxicillin.

Please do not ever use undiluted apple cider vinegar on a dog and especially never on an open and raw, wounded skin. This would be very painful to a dog. Apple cider vinegar must always be diluted at least 50/50 with water.

Hey Deb,

Nothing is wrong with your dog licking ACV off her skin, but if it is a problem you might try filling a tub with warm water and adding ACV and then have her soak in the tub for 15 minutes, and then let her out and towel dry. Since she just got off of antibiotics they theoretically would have treated any staph. The next steps might be to fight what is causing the staph from the inside out. Read up on EC's pages for Ted's Borax Protocol for Dogs, and also alkalizing your pet's drinking water with baking soda. In addition, adding turmeric to her diet will help with inflammation, and you might also consider supplementing with acidophillus/beneficial bacteria, Quercetin and colostrum, and Yucca intensive. It may help to google these and read up on them, or read about them on EC's pages.

Good luck and please let us know what you do and what works for you!
