Ear Mites Vs Ear Infection In Dog

Posted by Mmarra (Peoria, IL) on 11/17/2014

I am trying to figure out if my poor Violet has ear mites or an infection. At first the ear had an oder and looked like really bad wax build up. I bought some ear cleaning items at my local pet store, and things seemed better. Then a few days ago it looked like bad wax build up again. Then yesterday I was pulling a chunk of thick dark brown gunk out of her ear. I started a 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar, yesterday after said gunk. Today they looked all puss filled. HELP!!! I'm trying to wait as long as possible to take her to the vet because those experiences are always traumatic for her. SO does it seem more like an infection or mites? Should I wait a few more days to see if the ACV works (seems like takes about 3 days to see results according to posts I've read), or should I just take her? She is not scratching at it, just a lot of shaking and pain when I clean it.

Hey Mmarra!

If this were my dog I would take her in to the vet soon. Pus filled ear sounds like an infection of some type; sounds like yeasty ears to me, but your vet will determine the nature of the problem and also if there are mites and the best way to treat the ear.

Moving forward using the ACV with water and isopropyl may help prevent a recurrence of the problem.

When my big dog had puss in his ear, I washed the interior with warmed chamomile tea and when dry, used warm olive oil with mascerated garlic. It never recurred. But I kept watching it.

I don't know if Violet is a cat or a dog?

The 'gunk' sounds more like yeast. In which case, it would be better to use half water/half white distilled vinegar instead of ACV. t could be related to a food allergy.. In which case you would need to look at diet.

Any grains will make it worse. It would be better to feed raw.

If it is an infection, I would give Colloidal silver.
