What Can Cause Elevated Liver Enzymes in Just 8 Months?

My husband just received the results of his semi-annual bloodwork, and he learned he had elevated liver enzymes (ALT-98, AST-50). In October the results were ALT-52, AST-29. He is 6'4", 180 lbs., age 64, type 2 diabetes, hypothyroid, AFIB, BP of 140/68.
He is taking metformin, NP thyroid, and Valsartan.
Any ideas what would cause this dramatic of a change to liver enzymes? Suggestions or changes to consider?
