Extreme Dizziness, Spinning, Vertigo After Getting Food Poisoning in Egypt

Posted by John (New York, New York) on 04/01/2016

Hello there, I'm a 29 year old male who has been athletic/fit for most my life, until two summers ago on a trip to Egypt when I experienced food poisoning. I got the most severe food poisoning after a meal of roast chicken and salad, not sure which one caused the food poisoning. The burning pain began instantaneously and endured for two weeks, followed by severe diarrhea, bloating and hunger pain. After seeing a Gastro and performing blood work, stool test and endoscopy. No bacteria or any kind of stomach bug was found. All that was found was signs of esophageal irritation which my doctor said was caused by too much acidity in the stomach. My hunger pains were killing me and the doctor prescribed omeprazole 40 mg 1 pill a day for a month. The pain subsided but never fully went away.

A year later, I was very depressed as my father passed away. My stomach was manageable but I still felt the stomach pain and had several bowel movements a day, usually 10-15 mins after any meal. Then I started developing bad muscle involuntary spasms, heart arrhythmia(pvcs), chest pain and occasional ocular migraines(started with vision blur then severe headache). I went to a neurologist, did a 100 tests including an MRI, all to tell me once again everything is normal. I also saw a heart doctor for my arrhythmia, who did an MRI on my heart, echo diagram and stress test, told me he saw my pvcs. He stated that they are normal and the fact that they bother me is just because I can feel them but they are not life threatening. Recently I've been using ACV, molasses and cayenne pepper daily to try to eliminate the choking sensation and chest pain caused by the pvcs. Since last July, I've been experiencing spinning sensation to add to my undiagnosed stomach issues. As I still have the mild hunger pain, gas, and several bowel movements a day makes me wonder if my body even absorbs nutrients.

Current Symptoms:

  • extreme dizziness,
  • spinning
  • vertigo
  • feel like I'm falling while I'm standing still and closed eyes
  • nausea

Due to this, I saw an ENT who did ear exam, VNG and concluded that I have loose crystals in my ear or merniers disease and that after 4 weeks of vestibular therapy I would be either cured or this is something I would have to learn to live with. I have tried to live with the dizziness and vertigo everyday but I feel like I'm losing my sanity. I read someone mention that herpes can sometimes cause this, so I went to do a blood test for that and found that I was positive for herpes type 1 simplex out of range (4.68) although I have never had a cold sore on my mouth or my genitals. I've only ever had canker sores on the underside of my tongue on the connector that holds the tongue down.

I feel like all the health problems I have began after the food poisoning and can't help but believe that it's all somehow related to this; that maybe when my stomach got infected, I developed some leaky gut or something that in turn let the herpes virus in my blood eat away at the nerves that control my balance. Also the that same stomach leaky gut or problem has been the one depleting my body of the minerals needed for my heart to beat normally and makes it beat out of rhythm? Lastly, I would like to add that about a week ago I had a sexual encounter and the condom broke. Afraid of contracting any disease I was prescribed Post-exposurre prophylaxi (PEP) and I stopped the medication on the 3rd day due to its side effects. However one thing that I gathered from being on this medication is that all my dizziness or vertigo like feelings disappeared while on these drugs. I wonder if what I have is viral as PEP medication suppresses viral infections in the body. Please help me I know that a lot of people here have tried a lot of different things and I also hope that maybe Ted can help me personally with on going battle that I have been trying to fix for over a year.

Thank you so much for your time.

Dear John,

I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope I can offer some help here as I have had very similar symptoms off and on for a long time.

Years ago, my mother and I decided to drive from Calgary to Vancouver on my summer break from college. On a whim that I regret to this day, one night in the mountains, we stopped at a restaurant and I stupidly decided to order raw oysters. 24 hours later in Vancouver, I got terribly, terribly sick. After I recovered from the stomach distress, I had the worst car sickness every time I was a passenger in a car. For several months I had to take dramamine (typically used for sea sickness) so that I could travel.

A year later, I took a solo trip to SE Asia and a few days after arriving in Thailand, I got some kind of food poisoning again, but this time in the Thai jungle near the Cambodian border (yes, I followed a Lonely Planet travel book recommendation and ended up in a remote region, not a good place to get sick when you're alone). I have no idea what I ate or drank that made me so violently sick, but a day later I managed to make my way back to Chiang Mai by taking the most painful 12 hour bus ride ever. I spent the next 2 weeks laying in bed in a cheap hostel because my vertigo was so bad. If I tried to stand up, the room would spin and I felt like throwing up. Exactly the symptoms you describe. The symptoms finally ebbed and I was able to continue my travels, but to this day, I still get car sick very easily. Every time I do, I think back to eating those darn raw oysters and the food poisoning in Thailand .. and this happened over twenty five years ago!

Because your symptoms sound so much like mine, I wonder if it's too late to test for shellfish poisoning and if positive, find some remedies to treat this. Secondly, I would stop drinking apple cider vinegar immediately. This can cause arrhythmias in some people and increase vertigo. I say this from personal experience. Somewhere on Earth Clinic you can find my account of apple cider vinegar side effects.

Thirdly, if me, I would immediately start supplementing with magnesium and b vitamins. You might be severely depleted in both of these. Potassium might be another one you are depleted in, as well as electrolytes. These are the supplements that have helped me over the years tremendously to counteract the symptoms you describe.

You were probably already told this from your doctor, but I also would keep salt to a minimum. It can also make the vertigo much worse.

If your stomach gets too upset with magnesium supplements, you can use magnesium oil, easily obtained on amazon. I like the powdered magnesium called Calm, but it has recently started causing burning in my stomach about an hour after I drink it. I think they changed the formula.

Hope this helps some. I am sure some of our other regulars on EC will write in with many more suggestions. Please let us know how you are doing.

My best to you, Deirdre

John, I would bet money that you picked up something in Egypt from unsanitary water that rinsed your salad. Maybe giardia? Sounds a lot like your symptoms. You might want to look into that.

Dear Deirdre,

Thank you for replying. I'm sorry that you have gone through vertigo and dizziness for so many years, knowing how it sucks the joy out of life, I can't imagine having to live with this for the rest of my life. I have already done an allergy test for all foods and everything has come back negative. All blood work I do for any possible infections or tests always comes back negative; yet not a day goes by that I'm not dizzy, which has been the most frustrating part of this last year. I hope that the apple cider vinegar is not attributing to the vertigo because I do believe it has helped a lot with my arythmia, along side the molasses and cayenne pepper. I could try to stop taking it, although I'm positive that since using it, it has not made symptoms worse. I actually feel it has helped with reducing my hunger pains that I used to get a lot of.

One thing I have never tried is supplementing magnesium, I have a box of "calm" but after trying it, it would give me a bad headache. So I decided to not try it again but maybe it's beneficial to get it in pill form. At this point I feel I must try to do anything if it helps. I recently purchased colloidal silver and started spraying it in my ears, 3 sprays each side, also started taking 1 pill a day of ginkgo leaf, but still do not see any improvements in dizziness or spinning.

I also forgot to mention in my original post that I also grind my teeth severely while I sleep, not sure for how long this has been going on but Iv been prescribed a mouth guard for two years already that I've never used. Can the symptoms I have be somehow related to TMJ?

I honestly can't imagine how but nothing makes sense at this point. I still have several bowel movements a day, mainly shortly after most meals. I'm convinced that I have something wrong with my digestive system but not sure what it is exactly; whether it be leaky gut or candida or high acidic stomach! I've tried the Dramamine which helps but I don't believe I can live on it...I am very eager and determined to find the cure!

Those few days that I was on anti viral suppressants, the dizziness and vertigo had completely vanished...It felt bitter sweet to feel normal again knowing that it was only due to the fact I was on very heavy toxic anti viral drugs.

Thank you again for your time, And I really hope more people with similar stories and experiences can help me too.

All the best you, John

Hi John,

I know your post is from two years ago. I was wondering if you found a solution to your problem as I have the same exact symptoms after having some sort of food poisoning back in February 2018. I hope you recovered from it as it is the worst feeling ever. All the best

John from NY, NY,

If an antiviral helped your condition and you feel you still have the virus, you might consider silver nanoparticles as it has antiviral activity with relatively low toxicity at effective dosing.

With antivirals, generally speaking, the virus must first be found through testing and then the correct or most appropriate antiviral can be prescribed whereas silver nanoparticles are more broad spectrum than specific antivirals and do not carry the same risk for potential side effects associated with prescription antivirals. Read up on silver nanoparticles as an antiviral and see what you think.

Dear John, For the last two years, I have been suffering from stomach problems, and with the lack of the blood work pointing towards regular stomach bugs...I have never been given anything but ambiguous answers from Gastro doctors that I have acid reflux and IBS. While in fact I believe I have leaky gut from that stomach infection I had in Egypt. I just don't know why no parasites ever show up in blood work Thank you for your help.

HI U JOHN,,,,,,,,,, I too have a gut problem and my Anti-aging doctor put me on EnteraGram, which is a bone marrow food product that your doctor must order.

You may have followed the tread, where lots of folks got involved with recipes that they offered.

You also may want to do ozonated water to clean up your stomach.

My gut is slowly getting better, so I can recommend the bone broth. You can make it or buy it.

Hope this gives you some relief. ==ORH==

HI U OLE PATOOTS DOIN,,,,,,,,,, headed to St George's Island next month for our spring vacation and will stock up on the local shrimp to bring home. Here is the reason why.

http://www.naturalnews.com/053528_seafood_contaminated_pig_feces.html

I can promise you that all sea food served in 5 star restaurants are from this ilk. That is the reason we raise our own vegetables. Got Montazoma's revenge in Mexico City from their strawberries in the late 70's and that cured me forever. I have never been that sick before or after.

I am a smart Redneck and proud of it. I will just eat the veggies and fruit that we raise. If you don't buy my line, then listen to Deirdre or the last poster she addressed. The world is trying to feed us garbage. You can eat it or not. That is your choice. If it's in a can or a bag then it's garbage. That is the reason my senators voted not to label food. It's the mushroom thing, they just want to keep you in the dark and feed you manure.

Have a nice day, which is Southern for " kiss my grits".

HI U DEB,,,,,,,,,,, yep, things are getting interesting. Our gov'ment wants to control us like cattle. When we bought our lake site and farm in Meigs, all told us that we were crazy for moving to Meigs. Yep, they wild and strange, but they live and let live.

We have lived all over the Sweat South and we chose the right place. All know we pack heat and honk or wave as they pass out little farm when we are out working. We are accepted Rednecks.

I can't solve all the EC health problems, but I can get folks to think. I'm like Goldwater, some loved him and some hated him. He spoke to you straight.

John, I have suffered for almost a year with severe vertigo. After months of continued test and dead ends, I went to a chiropractor. Got a manual neck adjustment and within 3 days my vertigo was completely gone. Before the apointment my dr had prescribed me rx strength Sudafed. It did nothing for me at the time and I stopped taking it. However, now a year later I started getting vertigo symptoms back. Having not gone back to a chiropractor since, I am probably due for an adjustment. However I decided to try the suddafed that was prescribed and so far it has been working this time. Idk if either of these will help, but if you are like me after almost a year with these debilitating symptoms you're willing to try anything.

Hi Kelley,

Try 1/4 tsp. of ground ginger in about 1/2 C warm water every few hours if the first dose does not help.

Good Luck!
