Greyhound Rescue Terrified, Please Help

Posted by Sheena (Virginia) on 04/26/2018

I recently took in a gorgeous 6 year old retired racing Greyhound. I have two other the same age that are typical of the breed--laid back mostly couch potatoes. The new girl has been living in a home for two years and her owner said she was skittish--no she is terrified of everything and everyone except for my other two gentle hounds!! I simply cannot touch her at all. I put her food in my bedroom, leave then she runs in to eat. She is completely house trained and goes out with the others. Not a bit aggressive. She goes out at night then does not want to come back in however. Any advice or suggestions?

Hey Sheena,

You might start by having the new girl wear a long leash 24/7/365 so you can get a hold of her by stepping on the leash vs having no control at all in getting her inside at night. Some frightened dogs relax quickly when they realize someone is in control at the end of the leash. Also keep in mind it can take 6 weeks or more for certain dogs to adjust to a move, and if it has been a short time then it sounds like your girl needs even more time. You might also consider various essential oils - lavender for stress, or a combination such as Valor that helps dogs feel confident. I would apply these topically to the inner ear leather vs using a diffuser. Another thing to try is hand feeding, but if she refuses then use your hands to shape her food into balls and when she eats them she will have your scent on the goodies and make that association.
