I Have Had Scent Allergies For 10 Years

Posted by Judy (Burlington , On, Canada) on 12/29/2010 5 posts

I have had scent allergies for 10 years since I stopped drinking alcohol. I cough all the time but when I come in contact with perfumes/scents/smoke as well as popcorn in theatres I cough even more. I have tried many things even a sinus operation to no avail. Because of this problem I have become a recluse and would like any suggestions please. Thx.

Hi Judy, The symptoms you have mentioned are ones that some people who have ended up being diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity but had them for some time (even years) before being diagnosed. Although most have the diagnoses of Fibromyalgia or CFS first. These symptoms usually come on some years before and just get more debilitating if nothing is done. Some even have post nasal drip making their coughing worse. I have seen some good results if this is detected early and something done about it. Two of my friends showed most of these symptoms and the following are some of the things they did.

1/. Stop eating all white foods (processed). This includes all fizzy drinks.
2/ . Stop burning the candle at both ends and get plenty of rest.
3/. Magnesium, Vitamin C
4/. Remove every chemical from your home.
5/. Take something to help your liver. Eg: Milk Thistle
6/. Drink fresh vegetable juice each day.
7/. Accepting help

... This may not be your problem but it might be worth doing some research. Check these also on EC. All the best in finding your answers.

I need help, please! I think I may be having a reaction to ACV or Iodine detox symptoms or both.

I had decided to take ACV after reading DC Jarvis' book, as well as very low doses of Iodine/ide and then 1 to 2 drops of Lugol's 5%.

Today, I have pimply rash on my sternum, face and throat and my face is swelling around my eyes and lips, painful. I thought maybe it was the Lugol's but would it cause such a reaction after only 3 days of taking 12.5 mgs of Lugol's (2 drops)? I'm not sure if I'm getting better since the symptoms had changed from the rash and itching to rash-only in certain spots and a face swelling. I'm breathing fine, but the dry, itchy face is bothering me, not to mention the pimples. My eyes have begun to water too.

Could it be the ACV, since I stopped using the Iodine/ide, but have continued using the ACV to try and relieve my symptoms only to make them continue or develop? Is there a remedy or relief to a reaction to ACV?

I had used it once before; last year for a sinus infection. It did wonders and cut my infection time in half. I've been telling my husband that I'm going through major detox and that's what I'm experiencing right now, but I want some relief and would love to have it homeopathically if I still can.

Update: I went to urgent care last night because I was so tired of being so puffy, cracked, itchy, swollen and pimply and wanted to see if the MD could give me any insight on my symptoms.

MD Dx'ed me as having 'contact dermatitis', so I still don't have a definitive answer as to what or why I have these symptoms. I'm on Benadryl and Prednisone now, but will stop earlier than recommended. So I will wait it out a bit before I start ACV again, while I'm waiting I've got to go through my house and memory to figure out what triggered 'contact dermatitis'. MD suspected poison oak or ivy. The MD nixed the idea that I could be allergic to ACV. The nurse there didn't think it was iodine triggering a reaction either.

If you are doing iodine supplementation, I suspect your symptoms might be from Bromine Detoxing. I think you need to be taking co-factors and lecithin granules to help release the toxins from your body. It sounds like they may be trapped and causing your symptoms. Maybe another reader can expand on this info. Hope this helps!

I'm almost 100% better since my first post. I did more investigating after visiting Urgent Care and the doc asking me to list new or unusual things I've come into contact with at the onset of my reaction.

I think I've figured it out: Pittosporum tobira, a common enough shrub in CA and the one huge shrub I trimmed back before I had started showing signs of a reaction. It's not a common allergen, but its pollen, fragrance and oil/sap can trigger a reaction.

I'm still taking the Benadryl and Prednisone the MD prescribed, but I am also using ACV to speed up healing on my face. It's working too. After some diluted ACV on a cotton ball, I massage a little Jojoba oil on my face particularly around my mouth and any tight, extremely dry areas.

Sheila, the prednisone has some bad side affects if used too long. You can research the dangers of it.

I agree with Debbe - if You have been taking prednisone for any length of time and decide to stop taking it be very careful. You have to taper off of it slowely or it can shut down your adrenals and kill you. My husband was on it for 8 weeks and decided to stop taking it - not knowing it was such a huge deal.. He is fine now, but it was very ugly.

Read up before doing anything... It is a horrid drug in my opinion - makes a person feel great for a while, and then just sucks the life out of them. Natural cures are so much safer....

I appreciate the cautionary notes. I did do some reading on Prednisone, and also had a friend warn me about it. My Rx is only for a week, but I decided to stop taking it after 3 days... tapering off--my adrenals can't take the kind of strain Prednisone would put on them.

I'm still a little itchy and puffy from the dermatitis, but not like before. I'm using the ACV and Peroxide dilutions and taking a bunch of supplements. I want to try far infrared sauna soon, but not until the dermatitis reduces a bit more. Thanks!

Glad you are doing better Shiela!

Please post on the infrared sauna if / when / after you try it... I am interested in what you think of it.
