Hi there, I ve just starting supplementing lightly with Lugols Iodine. I started transdermally and will start doing orally. But I ve been reading about success with intravaginally for helping the mucous membranes, dryness and consistency of the fluids. I am wondering if I can use Lugols or do I need a different type of Iodine? I can't seem to find the direct answer I am looking for.

TIA

Hello Jenneration,

Dr. Jonathan Wright, MD, at Tahoma Clinic, has written and lectured about using iodine douches for various conditions.

In one of his articles he briefly describes a therapy using "SSKI" intravaginally:

"SSKI can also help clear up vaginal infections. 20 to 30 drops in water, used in a small “douche” once daily for five to ten days will usually do the job. (There's actually a prescription-only iodine preparation available for vaginal infections, too.) However, iodine preparations of any sort for vaginal infections are often not popular because of the inevitable orange-brown stains they leave on clothing."

SSKI is a saturated solution of potassium (K) iodine containing about 764 mg - 1000 mg iodide per mL. There are approximately 15 drops per mL. So, the iodide dose is about 51 mg per drop. It is conventionally rounded to 50 mg per drop. Some people make their own by dissolving KI crystals in distilled water until no crystals dissolve = saturated.

SSKI is on the WHO's List of Essential Medicines and has been used medically since 1820. It is most commonly used to break up mucous in the airways for many respiratory conditions and is the form used to protect the thyroid from nuclear radiation.

It can be purchased OTC (e.g., Pure Encapsulations) or from a compounding pharmacy or physician's office.

CAUTION: initially, only try a scant amount to test for any sensitivity reactions. And, best to consult a holistic practitioner before using Iodine to get a thyroid panel test. Also, many Americans experience various adverse symptoms when starting iodine due to common toxicity issues and nutritional deficiencies including a severe chronic iodine deficiency. Many need to take specific nutritional supplements before taking iodine (e.g., C, Mg, B2, B3, Omega 3, Zn, Selenium, Tyrosine and others).

Hope you find your solution,

Sherri
