Is Diatomaceous Earth Safe for Human Skin
Posted by April (Hollywood) on 07/03/2015
Hi. I'm making a body polish (sugar scrub) and it's attracting ants. Is diatomaceous earth safe and effective for such a product that's used topically on human skin? Thank you and regards, April

Dear April,
In general I would say that it is not harmful to human skin. I think it can be drying to the skin, though.
Diatomaceous Earth will not deter ants from the sugar scrub. Its mechanism is to kill insects after they contact the DE. If you could add Peppermint Essential Oil to your sugar scrub, that would be more likely to deter them. Cinnamon or Clove Essential Oils would be other scent options that may deter the ants. You would not need to add much to your sugar scrubs as the oils are quite strong.
