My Dog Has Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia

Posted by Lynn (Johnstown, Pa) on 04/20/2015

My precious dog, Miley, was just diagnosed with Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and I am devastated. She is currently in the animal hospital receiving high doses of prednisone and an immunotherapy drug, chemo. I am afraid I'm going to lose her because her red blood count is so low. Her immune system is destroying her blood. She went in on Friday with a count of 12. On Sunday her level went up to 15 but then back down to 14 on Monday morning. Monday night she went up to 15 again. But she is still very lethargic and her numbers are still too low. I don't want to lose my dog. I will do anything to help her. I spoke with a chemist from California who has developed a product that has been successful for treating FIV in cats. There is a good chance the drug can help my dog, as well. My vet said it's worth a try and is ordering it. I'm also going to try to put my dog on Transfer Factor, a natural product to help with the immune system. If anyone has any other suggestions that can help my dog, I would be very appreciative. I will do anything to help her.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog having AIHA. I posted back in 2012 about my Golden Retriever having IMHA. Here's the link with info that I posted about her situation. You may find this info helpful: https://www.earthclinic.com/pets/auto_immune_disorders.html

Alternative healing suggestion for AIHA: look into http://www.optimumchoices.com/

I purchased something from them to help my Lacey, but it was back in 2012, so I don't remember exactly what it was, but it did seem to help. You might want to email them and ask their advice.

Hey Lynn!

A blood transfusion may be in order - I am sure your vet has covered this with you; this will may be necessary to save her life and buy time for the steroids to do their thing. The steroids IMHO are absolutely critical here to supress the immune system so the blood can recover. The only thing I can say is that once you get past this obstacle that the episode seems very unlikely to reoccur. A friend of mine had a GSD that had an AIHA episode and after the steroids were tapered off her dog Holly - a senior at the time of the episode - went on to live to an advanced old age with out another AIHA eipsode.

Theresa, that's so interesting about the blood transfusion! Wish I had known that was an option back when my Lacey was sick in 2012, but perhaps not enough was known about AIHA/IMHA at that time.
