Urgent Help Needed for Puppy With Juvenile Pyoderma

Posted by Linda (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) on 03/31/2017

Hi, can anybody help us? I have a puppy 7 weeks old of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. A week ago we discovered very strange disease, which was identified as Puppy Strangles, (Juvenile pyoderma, or Juvenile cellulitus). Immediately we started her on antibiotic "Clavaseptin 62,5 mg" 1/2 tabl. 2x a day, then "Prednisolon 5mg 1 tabl. a day and eye gel Isathal 4x a day. After 3 days we didn't see any improvement - eyes were still infected, lymph nodes under the puppy's chin were getting even larger, puppy was getting even more of "bumps" (pestules) on the whole body and around the mouth, and on the top puppy started to lymp on one hind leg. On the advice of the vet the puppy was put yesterday on a stronger medication "Dexamethazone" instead of "Prednisolone" and also medication called "Atopica" o.13 ml 1x a day. Also for the eyes we got another gel called "Maxitrol" to insert every 3 hours. Since yesterday the eyes are getting better, but all the swelling on the body is still the same if not worse. Puppy is still eating well - we put her on canned food Royal Canin Gastrointestinal formula. We are really afraid that we might to loose this puppy. Can anybody help? Thank you.

Dear Linda,

I am sorry to hear about your puppy!

I would try turmeric internally. I am guessing your puppy is maybe 3 pounds? I would give a pinch (1/16 teaspoon) to him 4 times a day. Mix it into a teaspoon of full fat milk kefir or yogurt if you can with a few grains of black pepper. (not the whole peppercorn, just a tiny bit.)

I would also give some vitamin C powder- sodium ascorbate - 4 times a day - again, just a pinch.

Turmeric can be constipating and vitamin C can loosen him up. Just be aware of these two things.

You could also give him a dropperful of colloidal silver every other hour.

If you can get manuka honey I would give a little bit several times a day.

All of these will help to help infection and reduce inflammation.

For the eyes, extra virgin coconut oil is a soothing and antibacterial option.

Please let me know how he is doing!

Thank you very much for your advice. Just yesterday I was talking to my vet about the new lumps forming on the body of my puppy. I was told that he is not responding all the medication he is getting and that there is nothing else what they can do and that we still have only 50/50 chance to loose him.... I don't want to give up. Every 2-3 hours I am giving him hot compresses on those lumps with Epsom salt after cleaning the opened lumps with diluted Chlorhexidine and trying to get some of the fluid out of them. What I don't understand is, why those new lumps are still forming? Is is really enough for him to get just 1/4 tabl. of that Dexamethasone 0.5 mg A.M. and Atopica 0.13 ml P.M (both only 1x a day). Puppy is now around 2.5 kg. Can he get anything else? Please, help. Thank you.

Hey Linda,

I ditto the advice from M2M about dosing turmeric; consider also quercetin and yucca intensive. Keep your puppy warm and well hydrated. Consider use of diluted lavender essential oil, topically to calm the skin and for the aromatherapy as well. Boost immune system with vitamin C, colostrum. Hold and cuddle and talk to your baby and encourage him in his fight - healing touch helps. Please report back.

Thank you Theresa, I will try what you recommended. It seems that the puppy is starting to improve - he has more energy and he is even playing with his toys. Just some of the lumps are still large and so hard, so I hope that the hot compression will help. Thank you very much for your help.

Please try this. Massage the lumps with pure, cold pressed Castor Oil and ween him off the steroids with Licorice Root. Great info in Dr Kidd's book "The Herbal Dog"
