Posted by Sally (Kent Ohio) on 07/05/2015

My son 7 yr old got a tick on his penis. I removed it but the head was till in him, we went to the doctors she dug it out. 3 weeks later there is a bump and feels like something hard it in it. Not sure is this is normal. Just hoping she got it all out any suggestions on removing this cuz it is closed up ?

Dear Sally,

This does not sound normal.

We have had a lump where a tick bite was but it was not because part of the tick was still in the skin. For my little boys I have used a few drops of castor oil with a drop of tea tree and a drop of lavender essential oil on the swollen area several times a day. I also give a child that age 1/4 teaspoon turmeric twice a day (or 1 capsules twice a day if he can swallow pills.) I would give turmeric for a couple of weeks. Turmeric should be taken with plenty of water.

If you notice any other symptoms (especially fever or red streaks from the site of the bite) or the above does not help, I would seek further medical help.

The poor lad, of all the places to get a tick bite.

The lump may not be necessarily anything left in but a result of the tick bite itself. Activated charcoal drawing salve I think would help to pull any toxins out and help heal the lump. Was he given any antibiotics as a precaution after the tick bite?

I have found the best way to take Turmeric is to mix it with about 30ml (1oz) of full fat milk and add 1/8 tsp of black pepper. The compounds are fat soluble so not well absorbed otherwise and the piperine in black pepper helps absorption too.

I can appreciate young children may not like the taste but it's not that bad really if chugged down quickly.
