Recently Diagnosed With Osteoporosis and DDD - Help Please

Posted by Helen B (British Columbia, Canada) on 08/09/2024

I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis and degenerative disc disease at 61 years. I am awaiting a bone density scan which will take about 1 year to get here in BC Canada.

My doctor recommended taking Vit D (which I already take) and calcium. I am confused as I am reading that calcium supplements can be dangerous for post menopausal women which is why I have never taken any, I went through early menopause at 42 years old. Should I also be concerned about my heart health?

This is my daily vitamin list:

  • B12-2,500 mg
  • B3 - 25 mg
  • B50 Complex
  • Garlic oil - 3,000 mg
  • Zinc citrate - 12.5mg
  • PEA400 (Palmitoylethanolamide) - 4 daily 1,600 mg (for fibromyalgia pain)
  • Probiotic
  • Mixed E - 400 IU
  • Co Q10 - 200 mg
  • K2 - 120 mcg
  • D3 - 1,400 IU
  • Halibut Liver oil - 10,000 IU
  • Sunflower lecithin - 2,400 mg
  • Nattokinase + 100 mg
  • Magnesium oil spray
  • Vit C from ascorbic acid powder - 2,500 mg with 1/4 t baking soda
  • Lysine - 2,000 mg
  • Tumeric - 450 mg
  • Lugols strong iodine - 8 drops daily
  • Borax 1/8 t in 1 liter water 5 days a week (I started this about 3 months ago)
  • Melatonin lotion applied at night for Fibromyalgia pain
  • I also start my day with a smoothy to which I add,
  • 1 C blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • some walnuts
  • 1T raw sunflower seeds
  • 1T raw pumpkin seeds
  • 1T chia
  • 1.5 T FLax
  • 1t Moringa powder
  • 2T Raw Apple cider vinegar
  • Unsweetened plain soy milk.

I am hoping that someone can advise me on what to add to my list or what maybe isn't necessary that I can eliminate from this list. I am on a budget and if there's something that I don't need to be taking I will happily stop!

My daughter suggested bone broth daily but I have never been a big meat eater and I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to stomach this.

I did see the article about Melatonin being helpful so I will add an oral dose daily as well as the lotion.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Helen

Thanks Art!

Your dosing recommendations for Osteoporosis is

1. Magnesium - Total intake to 360 mg/day to start

2. Vitamin K2M7 - Total intake 200 mcg or if your doctor approves, 400 mcg total intake.

3. Strontium Citrate - 680 mg/day total with doctor approval

4. Boron - 20 mg/day to start up to 40 mg/day if your doctor approves

5. Vitamin B6 As P5P - 50 mg/day up to 100mg/day if your doctor approves

6. Vitamin D - Whatever it takes to get into the upper half of the reference range with your doctor's approval and monitoring.

Would you also add Hyaluronic acid and Melatonin to this list? I found your information on your friend 'Steve' to be compelling.

Also I have read how calcium may not be safe for post menopausal women, would strontium be safer then than calcium as it seems to work in a similar manner?

Thanks,

Helen

I have the same issues, because of early menopause at age 42. I am 62 years at present. What I find helping my situation is the inclined Bed therapy which I just started last 8 days. I use melatonin lotion, B12, Folic acid, flaxseed. My body is no longer aching.

Maria, thank you for the suggestions! How have you found the melatonin lotion? I started about 4 weeks ago and it has helped a lot with my fibromyalgia pain which is wonderful!

I have not heard of inclined bed therapy so I will be checking that out for sure.

I am already taking the B12 & Folic acid in a B complex and flaxseed in my smoothies and I can't say that I noticed any difference after starting these but I suppose things might be worse without them, I am glad they have helped you tho!

All the best,

Helen

How do you know you have osteoporosis if you had no bone density scan done?

Can you travel to the US and get the scan in WA State? Even that is not necessary and might only add an anxiety if you happen to show some not so perfect results.

Many people live with osteoporosis to the old age not even knowing they have osteoporosis.

No supplements would reverse osteoporosis. If you are active, walking and plenty of sunshine plus lifting really heavy weights once a week is all you need.

Supplements: This is an overkill, but does not include the most important ingredients should you decide to take the supplements route. YOU SHOULD NEVER TAKE ANY SOY SUPPLEMENTS AND EAT SOY FOOD- ALL SOY IS GMO.

And remember it is not what you eat but what you digest. AT 60 YOU MOST CERTAINLY HAVE LOW STOMACH ACIDITY AND GUT HEALTH ISSUES-focus on that for it causes malabsorption.

I found 3 locations in the state of Washington where you can get all the help you need:

OsteoStrong Wenatchee, OsteoStrong Mercer Island, OsteoStrong Lincoln Heights, Spokane. Check their websites, some might offer bone scans. If not, call them and they will tell you where you can get the scan.

P.S. OsteoStrong in my home city offers R.E.M.S. ECHOLIGHT SCAN.
It is a modern, radiation-free scan to assess bone health. This technology evaluates your bones safely and accurately, helping prevent fractures by ensuring timely and appropriate care. Unlike traditional bone density tests that use X-rays, this method is safer and more accurate.

My grandma lived to 94 and I am sure she had osteoporosis but it didn't interfere with her life and she never broke any bones.

Thanks for the advice and links! I can't go to Washington because I don't have a passport at this time and I also honestly can't afford it as we're living off my husbands government disability.

My doctor said that they could see on the x-ray that my bones were porous and also that my discs were substantially degenerated, thin. I have unfortunately not been that active the last few years as I have fibromyalgia and weight lifting, even though I would love to, causes me too much pain. I did weight train for about 10 years in my late 20's - 30's and was always a strong active person with very physical jobs until the fibromyalgia.

My thought is that I have a year until my scan and I am going to do all that I can for there to be signs of improvement. Fingers & toes crossed!

Thanks again,

Helen

Some people develop osteoporosis due to parathyroid disease. “… Nearly all of these people will begin to re-gain bone density following a successful parathyroid operation”*

“Symptoms of parathyroid disease do NOT correlate with the level of calcium in the blood. Many patients with only slightly elevated calcium and parathyroid hormone will have BAD symptoms and develop lots of secondary health issues.

All patients with parathyroid disease have calcium levels and PTH levels that go up and down. Fluctuating levels of calcium are typical of parathyroid disease.”**

So make sure your Ca, PTH, and vitamin D are in balance. Always check these blood markers before taking vit.D supplements because it can cause harm in case of parathyroid disease***

If you open the links, I did, you will learn more about osteoporosis than what you'll find here. You can at least call, or write to them and ask or advice. They are specializing in OSTEOPOROSIS. Weight lifting for people with osteoporosis is not what you might think. It is about osteogenic loading. You don't really need the scan. You already know your bones are porous. If you believe that food and supplements is the way to treat osteoporosis, you might eventually find out it doesn't really work, but you'll lose the precious time. The other thing is you can buy a Vibro Pro platform, its s expensive though, and start using it daily. There are several setting that are very gentle - you barely feel anything, but the cells of your body do.

Thank you for your suggestions! I have been reading through the links that you shared. I am seeing my GP this coming weeks and I am going to see if I can convince her to do further testing, I must admit that I can tick off most of the symptoms for parathyroidism but I realize they are also symptoms of other things. Fingers crossed!

Thank you,

Helen

Hi Helen,

Yes, to the melatonin as I wrote about here :

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/melatonin-for-osteoporosis.html

Currently, I think your topical use of melatonin lotion (ML) for fibromyalgia pain should be sufficient, but you might consider application to critical areas such as the hips and spine, especially the lumbar spine.

Regarding the hyaluronic acid (HA), yes also. Not just for degenerative disc disease (DDD), but also for osteoporosis as more recent studies suggest a benefit in terms of promoting bone formation. If possible, try the DDD/Stopain remedy first to determine if it is helpful for your DDD and then if that helps then you can begin the longer term remedy for osteoporosis as osteoporosis remedies usually take a year to start to show benefit.

As you can see, I did not have calcium on the osteoporosis list as I prefer to see people get their calcium from diet if at all possible, in smaller amounts that the body is better able to utilize properly as opposed to pills which can give very large doses too quickly.

One question Helen, since you have been using melatonin lotion for awhile now, do you feel that ML affects non-pain symptoms of fibromyalgia or does it only affect the pain symptoms?

Hi Art, I would say that it is only affecting the pain symptoms so far.

I am starting to wonder if something else might be going on. I got the current x-ray because I had a very sudden pain in my spine between my shoulder blades, and then the same in my neck a couple of months later. I was literally just standing when the pains happened, nothing strenuous before or at the time. It's a different pain from my fibromyalgia and I have also been feeling worse in my body, nothing that I can really explain just yucky.

I have had a few previous spine x-rays before this current one, the last one was within the last 2 years and I was told the same thing as previous x-rays, a little arthritis in the lumbar spine but not enough that it should be causing pain and now suddenly it's Osteoperosis and disc degeneration. It seems to have happened suddenly.

I am meeting with my GP this coming week and I am going to see if I can convince her to do more testing.

I do love the melatonin lotion tho, it has helped immensely with some of the pain.

There is a very RARE lung tumor called Pancoast tumor that affects the upper portion of a lung. The main symptom is shoulder, shoulder ladder upper arm pain. Very difficult to diagnose. MRI is the standard scan but takes nearly an hour and literally heats your insides. Chances are you don't have it. Chances are it is nerve related pain. Hypericum 30c, a homeopathic remedy does work like magic, at least for me. And Rununculus bullbosus is specifically for shoulder-blade pain. It literally takes one pellet once to stop this pain. I know sounds good to be true, until you try. There is a very good post here on EC with all the information you need to know. You must read that post. Of course you have all kind of degenerations if you have osteoporosis. Nerves get compressed as well. And nerve pain is the strongest. No need to panic. Get the basic and extended blood work done. Pay attention to Ca serum. It can't be even 1 decimal above the normal range - it is all spelled out on the parathyroid.com site.

Meantime get Arnica, Hypericium and Ranunculus all 30c. Try it for pain. Not all at once, one at the time and select the one that matches closely your symptoms.

Hi Helen,

Please let us know how the visit with your primary care physician goes and if they are able to make other determinations as to cause or causes for your spinal issues.

An update. I did see my GP and I feel she was very thorough and understanding of all of my concerns. There doesn't seem to be anything that stands out in the lab work aside from my cholesterol being high still, even on the Statin she has me on. She believes it's genetic which apparently means it can't be controlled with diet, which I did try. She referred me to a cardiologist who increased my Statin dose and is sending me for a stress test and ultra sounds. My GP wanted to put me on hormone replacement therapy because I went through menopause at an early age but I am not keen on the idea and I don't have any menopause symptoms, unless all my symptoms are from menopause ( ha ha ). My calcium level is 2.46, ( 2.15 - 2.60 ) being the 'normal' range so I guess it's good? Do I need to take additional calcium? My GP recommends 400mg a day for the Osteoporosis. When I asked the Cardiologist if taking calcium was safe for my circumstances she said 'why not?', but I was under the impression that Calcium was risky for my age and being post menopause. I did buy the Stop Pain for my back which works pretty good! And with the Melatonin lotion has helped me a fair bit. I started taking Hyaluronic acid 200mg and it might be helping my back, it's definitely not as painful as it was. Art would you still recommend the Strontium if my Calcium level is seemingly normal?

They say parathyroidism causes secondary symptoms. Just have Ca, D25 and PTH tests done, preferably 2 times or as it is suggested on the parathyroid site.

I began taking Osteo-K for my osteoporosis. It has good reviews by those who have had dexascans and it has reversed osteoporosis for some. Has MK4 with calcium and D. I have not had a scan because of the radiation, but have noticed the bones in my thin legs are now more "even." Before they had dips and ridges when I would run my hand along. Please read about this and see if you are interested.https://shop.nbihealth.com/products/osteo-k

I looked it up and it is basically an overpriced D+Ca+K supplement. It is missing many important bone building elements and supplementing Ca is NOT recommended at all.

Glad that you feel better, make sure your kidneys and heart don't suffer as a consequence of taking this supplement.

My understanding of the calcium issue is that it is not utilized correctly because other nutrients are missing. I have not found another supplements with these reviews. I have testing each year and will know if I have too much calcium. I don't eat dairy products. Please send a reference with your information so I can check it out.

Hi Helen,

I think that regarding the calcium that your GP recommends of 400 mg/day, it would be best to get that amount from foods high in calcium as opposed to a supplement.

Regarding the strontium, I would place the other supplements I wrote about in that article ahead of it in terms of importance for osteoporosis.

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/osteoporosis-supplements-art-solbrig.html

Regarding the hyaluronic acid, I use NOW brand Double Strength Hyaluronic Acid (HA) capsules which contain 100 mg of HA per capsule and I have found 300 mg/day to be the effective dose for DDD. Here is a link to the product on Amazon:

A quick question that you may or may not know the answer to.

I have a bottle of B50 complex but the B6 is 50mg Pyridoxine Hydrochloride. I realize this isn't the P-5-P that you recommended. Would it be ok to add P-5-P considering I still have an almost full bottle of the B50 complex?

Hi Helen,

I would just use up the bottle of B50 and switch once you have used it up.
