Puppy Strangles Cured But Now Dog Has Runny Eyes

Posted by Linda (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) on 05/07/2017

Can anybody help? My puppy was going through "puppy strangles", which we were able to cure with help of steroids, antibiotics and hot compresses with Epson salt (which I was doing every 2-3 hours...). He is doing fine now, no more any new signs of the disease. We are now slowly lowering the amount of the steroids and adding probiotic (FortiFlora). He is now 3 month old and he has another problem: "running" eyes. The tears are not draining through his nose. I am not sure if this is due to his long term healing, or it would happened anyway.... Is there any other way how to help this problem beside flushing the tear ducts under anaesthetic?

Hey Linda,

You do not mention breed, but some breeds are prone to runny eyes when teething. Another consideration would be entropion [where the eye rims roll inward and the eye lashes rub on the eyeball] and distichia [extra eye lashes that poke into the eyeball]. Your vet should easily be able to diagnose these eye conditions.

Thank you for your reply, Theresa. The puppy is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and I will definitely ask the vet what they can tell me about his running eyes. I hope we will be able to help my little puppy boy. Thank you again....

Hello Linda,

At just 3 months teething is in full swing for your puppy so runny eyes might be expected for the next few weeks. It certainly would be worth a trip to the vet for a quick peek at the eyes - not an emergency, just when you do a puppy check up for shots. This is a super comprehensive site on cavalier health that you may find useful information: http://www.cavalierhealth.org/

Please keep us posted!

My 6 year old Cairn Terrier had puppy strangles at 2 months of age...she is fine now but the tear ducts in her eyes were affected and she ended up with teary eyes. They have improved finally (I started giving her Missing Link 2 months ago) so that I no longer give her the antibiotic that the vet said she would need the rest of her life!
