How Can I Heal Flashing in Eye From Rubbing Itchy Eyes?

I have had some serious eye allergies recently that I finally got a grip on after several months. Turns out I'm allergic to coconut. I rubbed and rubbed as it was the most unbearable itching. After a week or so of no itching I started noticing a flash in the corner of my right eye. At first I thought it was a reflection but I determined it was in fact a flash happening. Freaked out, I went to my opthamologist who diagnosed it as the jelly stuff giving way in that area and a tiny hole there in the corner. If anyone knows what I'm talking about then you know because I can't explain it. He said it happens with age. I'm 53. I feel it is caused from the rubbing. A little too coincidental I think for it not to be. But he had no suggestions on healing this condition. Is there anything I can do to heal this or at least prevent any further damage?

Hi BonBon,

My neighbor recently had white lights flashing in her eye and immediately went to an opthamologist because it can be a sign of the retina pulling away from the back of the eye, especially in people who are very nearsighted. He had to laser the tear in the back of her eye in place, and after three weeks, he did the other eye because it had thin areas that could easily pull away. Untreated, this can lead to a detached retina and blindness. The eye gel becomes less as we age, and in those with elongated eyeballs causing strong nearsightedness, the back of the eyeball is already stretched thin and is more prone to tear. She said the white light kept flashing, not just once, and was not painful. I have heard of it happening as the result of a sneeze or head injury, but believe it could happen to anyone. Not sure if this is what you are describing or not, and since you had it checked, hopefully what you had was something different. Best wishes.
