Seeking Help From Bill Thompson Regarding Three Week Constipation

Hi Bill,

I remember reading you talking about an elderly man in Luzon who hadn't gone poo for about a month and was almost dead when you helped him.

I cannot find where you wrote this, I've searched Earthclinic and both your books, could you possibly tell me what the herb was you advised as my girlfriend's grandfather in Samar is in a similar position (3 weeks) and won't take medicinces or supplements.

Hi Mark...The herb that I gave the man with constipation was Makabuhay(Tinospora cordifolia). This herb vine grows profusely all over the Philippines and you can get it for free -- you should be able to find it in the lowlands of Samar. It has large heart-shaped leaves and has a dark pimply stem -- which are unique to the Makabuhay plant, so its easy to find. Most Filipinos will know Makabuhay.

Just make a decoction of the plant stem and take it 3 times a day with fresh juice. It has quite a bitter taste.

Just to be safe, your girlfriend's grandfather should really be checked by a doctor to assure that his liver is OK (bile production) and to determine whether he has any physical blockage in the intestines which might be caused by a cyst or tumor.

Thank you very much.

As a temporary fix she got him to drink a lot of fresh squeezed coconut milk so he got the runs. And yes, she knows the plant, said it everywhere, also says her grandfather knows the plant but for some other use.
