Seeking Help for Cocker Spaniel with Ear Infection

Posted by Valdi (Nelsprui) on 06/22/2015

Good day.

I have a Cocker Spaniel. There is some yellow / green fluid coming from his ear and he keeps shaking his ear and moaning. I can see it is affecting him as he is not himself at all. At the moment I can not take him to the Vet, please give me some advise to what to do to help him. Is there a real Home remedy that will work? He is like a child to me and I love him dearly and seeing him in pain is aweful for me.

Please let me know

Thanks

:)

Your cocker spaniel's ears are severely infected!!!! Get him to the vet, for god's sake!!!

He needs to be healed FIRST with antibiotics from the vet. Then, AFTER he's healed use the following to prevent further ear infections:

Healthy Ear Recipe (from Arcane)

1 tube Monistat (generic is fine)
1 tube Polysporin (use the real deal - it's inexpensive)
1 tube Cortaid (generic works here as well)

Use tubes of similar size. Mix all three together in a container that can be closed well. It takes a bit to incorporate because the Polysporin is a
bit like Vaseline. Once incorporated, it stays mixed.

If ears are gunky, inflamed or smell bad, start with using a pea sized dollop twice a day. Use your finger to gently push it into the ear. Rub.
Dogs will only shake their heads once or twice! It's a creamy, very soothing mixture. Once you have the ears under control, lessen how often
you use it till you're only using it once a week. Once a week keeps ears from getting bad again.

My doctor (human) is the one that came up with this as her dogs were having ear issues that weren't really under control from the things her vet was prescribing! Anyone that I know that has gone to using it has had remarkable results and the dogs are much happier and SAFER than using anything with alcohol in it. I was told by my vet that alcohol just dries the ear out - which includes drying out the ear drum AND that if there is even the tiniest of perforations in that ear drum, it can let alcohol down into the middle ear where it can do permanent damage. That's why this cream is SOOOOO good! There's nothing "liquid" about it. It goes in and melts it's way down to where it's needed. No alcohol to cause drying or damage and it will take care of anything yeast, bacterial etc...

Hey Valdi!

I agree with others advice; see your vet as your poor dog is indeed suffering.

That said, if the vet is absolutely out of the question, I would look for assistance from a rescue group. If that too is out of the question I would order online Zymox Otic HCL; if spending money at all is right out...

I would crush 3-4 cloves of raw garlic and let steep over night in a light oil such as olive oil [do NOT use tea tree oil]. I would flush the ears with this garlic infused oil and use it as a means to clean them. The ears are likely inflamed - the products others have mentioned [hydrocortizone] can help with this inflamation, as will feeding turmeric [over time]. Garlic in its raw form is a powerful antibiotic, but healing takes time and the remedy must reach deep into the ear in order to penetrate to properly work, so make sure you get the infused oil into the ear canal where the infection is. Treat 2x to 3x a day with strong, fresh garlic infused oil. You should see results after a few days. When the skin heals - the oozing stops - you can try a weak vinegar solution to flush the ears; try 1/4 cup white vinegar into 3 cups warm water. If this solution does not cause pain continue to flush the ears 2-3 times a day. You should see improvement - the swelling should start to come down. You can then use a solution of 1/3 water, 1/3 isopropyl alcohol and 1/3 white vinegar. ONLY use this solution if the ears are not bleeding or oozing pus.

As you know cockers have many ear issues and the key is to keep the ears flushed out on a daily if need be basis. A high quality diet - no corn, no grains - is also recommended for dogs with yeasty ears.

Please report back!

I have very good experience with homeopathic medications. Aconite C30 generally works, but if you can give more details there might be something better. Does the discharge smell bad? Is the ear red and/or sensitive to touch? All details help to choose the optimal remedy.

Hello Eileen,

The reason this particular Monostat product is not recommended for treating yeast infections is because it contains no ingredients to fight yeast infections.

These are the ingredients:

Active Ingredients: Dimethicone - 1.2 % (Skin Protectant)

Inactive Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica, Tocopheryl Acetate, Trisiloxane

All this product contains are skin protectants and skin conditioners and the medium to deliver the ingredients.

If you want a Monostat product that WILL fight yeast infections read the label, and choose products that contain Miconazole -the main active ingredient in their product line.
