My daughters dog came down with Cushing's at age 5. She was a vibrant Australian Retriever mix. My daughter got her as a rescue. She also had distemper when little & my daughter with the help of our very practical, eccentric, vet, nursed her to health. One day my daughter came home from work & found her dog hovering in a corner. EVERYTHING CHANGED in this dog. Scared, jumpy, etc. My daughter called & said "I think Nico is blind." We took her to our vet-he called her name, she looked up, & the vet with tears in his eyes, said she was 100% blind. We took her to a fancy vet clinic out of town & the vet wanted $1,500 for a brain scan just to verify Nico was blind. Forget that! Went to our vet, & because of distemper, she could not smell. Our vet said most dogs learn to get around by smell if they are blind. It was heartbreaking to see her run into walls, furniture, etc. Our wonderful, eccentric but practical vet, told us to love her, let her eat what she liked, & she would let us know when it was time for her to go to doggie heaven. It was hard, but harder watching her hiding in corners and running into objects. We didn't want to shove pills down her throat, as most of the time Cushing's doesn't get better. We just loved her as much as we could, and then said good-bye Nico.
