Vets Treatment Not Helping Cat With Chronic Uti And Cystitis

Posted by Allie (West Midlands, UK) on 03/26/2015

Please help! My male cat suffers from cystitis and urinary tract infections. He has suffered with them since October 2014. I take him to PDSA and they have kept him in on a catheter and prescribe him Hills prescribed C/D diet and give me Loxicom to put on his food. Unfortunately after feeding him this food and many trips to the vets, following the medication instructions, he still falls ill again. I am in need of other solutions as these don't seem to be working very well.

Hey Allie!

Sorry to hear about your boy's chronic UTI's :-(

Have you had the urine crystals analyzed? The most common are struvite, and acidifying your cat's urine would help dissolve these. If, however they are not struvite acidifying the urine could cause a recurrence. A proper diet would normally acidify the urine, but the most important thing is to get your boy to drink more water; this means no dry food, only wet or canned food.

Since your cat was obstructed, requiring the catheter, he might benefit from perineal urethrostomy surgery, which can greatly reduce a recurrence.

Reducing stress can help reduce the chance for recurrence; consider dosing Rescue Remedy or using cat appeasing pheromones to help keep your boy relaxed.
