Weight Gain and Insomnia After Menopause, Please Help

Posted by Trekkie (Auckland - New Zealand ) on 07/07/2021

Hi there. I am going through menopause and having the following awful issues. Horrible and uncontrollable weight gain despite me being slender my whole life.

I am now in the overweight category. Sleep issues. Averaging 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night. Have been taking 2mg slow release melatonin which isn't working. I've read taking melatonin for long stretches can have the opposite effect. Aching joints etc.

I am in remission from 2 cancers. Advice on what to take to stay in remission. I am on a very tight budget but would really appreciate your assistance.

❤️❤️ Thank you kindly 😘😘

Trekkie, you might want to look at what you are eating. Maybe try going gluten free for a week and/or sugar/dairy free.

Hi there. I am not sure if this will help or not (I have not researched based on your specific ailments) but you might want to look at Rick Simpson's cannabis Oil. This will help with appetite and sleep.

Hi Trekkie,

I've found Vitamin D3 for sleep to be the best of all the supplements I've tried for sleep... I take a high dose (20,000) but that's just what I need.

Weight gain - agree with Msmg, look at your diet. I've found a plant-based diet with easy to digest fresh veggies (avocados, especially) the best for weight loss.

Also having success with my homemade kombucha. Drinking just one a day pulled a few pounds off, which was very surprising, considering it does have some sugar in it. Store-bought kombucha did not have the same effect... I was drinking a store bought kombucha every day with no weight loss. It's incredibly easy to make.

most cancers are from sugars and excess estrogen that our fat cells produce. You might like to read John Lee book on menopause for insights. Progesterone, I wait for good coupons in my email from swanson to buy emerita progesterone and use half a pea size daily. Iodine affects hormones and minerals. As I read your post I heard calcium in my head . Calcium is very interesting and requires a lot of things to put it into the body> Vitamin D is a hormone and needs K-2 to absorb it and both affect calcium . So sunlight and kale or green veggies. Then silica is required to absorb calcium but also the other minerals all need to be there . Borax affects hormones and comes from 2o mule team soap and is cheep to use for boron, takes calcium out of soft tissues and puts it in bones and teeth. Estrogens are in most plastics and fuels and fertilizers and animal products. Lavendar is estrogenic and many other things are, you have to read a lot . Apple cider vinegar tsp a day in glass of water will help a lot of issues. Leave water out one hour with lid off to dissipate chlorine that affects iodine ports in the body and throws off hormones, and minerals. Simple reads of the watercure spells out a lot, Eric Berg and John Bergman on youtube, lots of insights. Coconut cures book is over the top helpful. Reset health but intermittent fasting. I have my own fires to put out, I have this approach to light my own fire to put out the enemies. I was watching this informercial teach how the body sends acids to the mouth to combat problems in mucus and it destroys teeth....hmmmmm more study . Blessings, charity

Good old fashioned Arm & Hammer baking soda (I use 1/4 teaspoon daily in 1/2 glass cold water) to help me keep my body from neuropathy (diabetes) when my body gets acidic. the baking soda causes it to become more alkaline enough that it stops the cramps within 4-5 minutes. I have been told and read over the years that cancer is caused by our bodies being acidic so that is why I recommended the baking soda. I am NOT in the medical field any longer, nor am I in the naturopathic field so this is only my opinion and I realize we all have one. but I do have good results with this and think it may help you and its cheap.

Check your vitamin D, B12 and look into fasting. Fasting is supposed to clean up the body. Could possibly help to keep the cancer away. Make sure you understand the correct way to do it as you do not want to make yourself sicker.

I had horrible insomnia off and on for several years during and after menopause. Part of my problem was pernicious anemia which caused extreme B12 deficiency. I started receiving B12 shots and things started to get better. My sleep is much better but I still have a problem with waking up after 4 or 5 hours and having trouble getting back to sleep. Here are some of the things I have done to improve my sleep:

No caffeine after 12:00 p.m.

No eating the hour before going to sleep

No computer or phone time for an hour before bed.

I drink a cup of ginger tea before going to bed.

I take a calcium/magnesium capsule right before going to bed.

I take a cup of ginger tea and another capsule of calcium/magnesium to bed with me and if I wake up in the middle of the night, I take the calcium/magnesium capsule and wash it down with some of the ginger tea. This will, most times, make me sleepy enough to go back to sleep within an hour.

I make sure I take an iron supplement several times a week. I've found that when my iron is low I can be totally exhausted but can't seem to get to sleep. It's very frustrating.

Unfortunately, even with all of this, I still sometimes have trouble getting to and staying asleep. Good luck with everything.

I too am menopausal and what I have found extremely helpful is to cut all empty carbs, eat only healthy carbs 95% of the time...also do intermittent fasting, it has helped me tremendously!!! Best to you!

For the cancer aspect you might want to look into high dose Melatonin.

That is approx 10mg day.

Possibly a Ketogenic diet and Hormone replacement therapy.

Dim is good for excess estrogen leading to cancer.

Maca powder balances your hormones even after a hysterectomy.

Cottage cheese and flaxseed oil kills cancer in the body as long as you don't eat sugar and carbs as sugar feeds cancer as does carbs as carbs turn to sugars in the body

Hi Trekkie,

When I had severe inflammation in my legs I went on the Gerson therapy (devised by Max Gerson for his migraines and then with great success for his patients with cancers) with the guidance and support from a qualified therapist who only charged me a minimal amount due to my financial issues. For a couple of weeks I just ate simply, loads of veggies and fruit with juices and trout or salmon once a week and a minimal amount of rye bread with a daily multivitamin, Q10 and a pancreatin enzyme tablet. I love returning back to nature and plant based foods for healing inflammation.

I also find no fault with urine therapy for healing and detoxing. There's so much info out there and it's reassuring once one trusts that it's natural. It does the job. I used it successfully for my skin cancer. There are UT fb groups galore with great support and search facilities with files on the books. There are so many ways to use it.

It sounds like you are very low in iodine and Magnesium. Your Thyroid needs Iodine!!!And you need Magnesium it helps produce energy.

Lugols solution from Amazon is good, it has 2% Iodine and 4% Potassium Iodide. costs about $29 but lasts a long time, I rub that on my arms, it stains clothes so do it in am when get up. 1oz bottle the original Lugols, by J Crow's.

There is a 2oz Lugols on Amazon for $14.95 by J Crow's. Exact same thing and 2oz!! Search on Amazon as sellers prices vary.

List Price: $18.24

Nascent Iodine is also good, I bought Go Nutrients, Nascent Iodine Supplement - (1.0 fl oz) $27.95 but prefer Lugols.

They both relax the body and help sleep. try and avoid drinking water with Floride and Chlorine in it. Crystal Geyser bottled water is free of those.

Transdermal Magnesium Oil from omicaorganics, its in a blue glass spray bottle around $16. Its not really an oil, not oily at oil. I spray 20 sprays on my arms and legs daily. they have free s&h in the USA.

"A Topical Spray of Ancient Inland Pure Ocean Minerals “high in Magnesium Chloride” with Lavender Hydrosole from Sophia's Biodynamic Garden."

Good books on these are: "Transdermal Magnesium Therapy"...by dr Mark Sircus.

"Healing with Iodine:Your Missing Link to Better Health"...by dr Mark Sircus. $14.62

The Iodine Crisis: What You Don't Know About Iodine Can Wreck Your Life by Lynne Farrow Paperback $18.59 Iodine : Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It by David BrownsteinPaperback $26.81

I think most Earth Clinic readers agree that sometimes things are a life-saver for one person but not another but I definitely believe it never hurts to try. I have taken melatonin and didn't think it worked at all. Now I take Rescue Remedy Plus sleep gummies and they are fantastic. They do have melatonin but something about the additional ingredients makes a huge difference. My daughter and granddaughter are both insomniacs as was my mother. Me, not so much, but I occasionally take 1 (dosage is 2) and they always work and have not become ineffective after time. Daughter and granddaughter take 2 and swear by them. I started taking them when I had shingles in my eye and they were the only escape from the sheer misery.

Also, I read a thing on the internet touting a sleep tactic that has supposedly been used by the military. It sounds too simple to be any good but it often actually works for me. I have the can't-stop-thinking problem that is usually what keeps people awake. Take two or three DEEP breaths and repeat, "don't think, don't think, don't think". Go ahead and laugh but it probably relies on our suggestibility. As I said, couldn't hurt.

Cancer-wise, have you looked into frozen lemons? I don't have personal experience but have read some interesting things.

Progesterone will help you enormously. It's lack puts you in an excess estrogen milleau that suppresses thyroid and increases blood glucose instability. Progesterone also increases the P17 gene involved in apoptosis to break down damaged cells. I believe that Metformin is dangerous simply by the fact that B12 is compromised. We get most of our B12 from our microbiome so it is a big red flag. Dr. Jason Fung is one of my favorite resources and has written about fasting to lose weight, overcome diabetes and its relationship to cancer.

You said you're in menopause? Estrogen and other hormones take a nosedive during that time and thereafter. That can cause weight gain, sleeplessness, and a whole host of other symptoms. Treat the cause (menopause) and not the symptoms. I know you said you are on a tight budget, but try saving up some funds to go to a Certified Holistic doctor. They can test which hormones you are low in then give you biodentical hormones to make up the difference and that would more than likely eradicate your symptoms for good!

So sorry you are suffering so much my friend and your symptoms are so many. I completely understand the sleepless nights and weight gain with the menopause as I suffer with that too. I seemed to have overcome one or two things right now and that's sleepless nights and big help with hot flashes. Try Red Clover. It's not expensive and easy to obtain. Do some research on it. I also take dandelion tea which helps with water weight and also assists with keeping cancer at bay according to some research. I lost a kg in 2 weeks. Not much you might say, but better than a kick up the bum!! Sincerely, the very best of luck to you.

God bless you Trekkie,

I would suggest you look into Chlorine Dioxide. I believe you need to detox all the poison from your body. Get on a very clean diet of fruit and veggies and water. Stop all the other supplements for now. Start meditation and heal your soul. Let go, forgive, maybe try binaural beats frequencies for menopause relief. Exercise by doing something fun, hiking, swimming, dancing in your living room! I just ordered chorine dioxide and will report back on my progress. Many here will be praying for you and you will feel the love!

Hey Trekkie, I am a medical scientist. There is a lot of research going on around iron at the mo', and iron being linked to everything bad really (think rust) and iron fortification of the food supply has possibly been a big mistake (as has the 'anemia is an iron problem' thinking). Iron is being linked to cancer, metabolic disease, dementia, ms etc. And eg at menopause, for women there is a sudden iron increase, and menopause symptoms are surprisingly similar to iron overload symptoms.

I would guess you might have some iron dysregulation or iron overload in the tissues (and low bioavailable copper). You can have a full iron panel blood test, but that does not tell you the tissues. But ferritin should be under 40, and saturation under 35%. If you have celtic/ viking ancestry you may have at least partial hemochromatosis genetics (most common genetic issue in white people that rarely gets diagnosed). Donating blood is a free option :). Copper regulates iron. Green tea helps chelate iron out of the brain, also Bragg ACV, turmeric, lactoferrin, cabbage, IP6. The work of Morley Robbins is interesting.

Best wishes :)

Hi Gert, I was reading your post and remembered when I told God I would go to a doctor and take their advice. They had lost my faith years before. The first one I saw was an internist and he said I had strange symptoms and asked if I would see his psychologist friend he had in college. Well I did many sessions and I learned a lot about myself and life, but my health was still a mess. I got another doctor for yearly exams and she put me on Prozac . I slept 12 hour nights and a four hour nap every day for four years. The family took many pictures of me in my chair with the pomeranians on me sleeping. I could eat any food but constipated all the time worse than normal. My emotions were level but I did not feel sad or ever cry. I gained 30 pounds . I finally worked my way off of that drug. I don't recommend it to anyone. I only share the experience. Serotonin, Prozac affect the gut's microbiota - ScienceBlog.com I slept 16 hours a day for 4 years.

first thing is to get your ph in balance.by keeping your PH between 6.5-7.5 cancer does not have a chance to grow.

drinking lemon water with apple cider vinegar (with mother) will help keep PH in balance.

another way is to watch the color of your urine, pale yellow is good. bright yellow is not. bright yellow indicated you are dehydrated and need more water. herbal teas, green teas, plain water with lemon.

also for menopause, increasing vitamins, D, C, B COMPLEX, IRON, SELENIUM, NIACIN, FLAX. EC has more info about menopause and what vitamins to increase.

I also read on EC that taking niacin at night will help with sleep. You might also try valerian root or kava kava. Each of these work for some people, other people it does not work for. I would increase melatonin to 5, or 10, but not necessarily every night.
