What Can Help My Cat Suffering From Anal Gland Issues

Posted by Terri (Neptune, Nj) on 04/15/2015

My 9 1/2 yr old cat has been having what seems to be similar problems with anal gland, as mentioned with other cats. Please I need to speak with someone about what I am seeing. It's breaking my heart seeing her like this and I have tried to help clean the area with warm water but it seems so painful she runs and hides from me. I even stopped using litter and used warm wet paper towels(soft ones). Actually this seems to help clean the area and she seems more comfortable. If no water is used in liter box, it seems she cannot clean it properly down there anymore.

She has gained a lot of weight and I thought maybe it was just that she could not get to that area properly. Angel has been preoccupied with that area to point of the care of the rest of herself has lessened. I tried last night to pour warm water, and could see how raw the area looks. Angel was found in a closed box in dumpster, saved by a child who heard meow's from that dumpster. Too young yet to have been taken from her mom, we cared for her.

Since we got her, my husband passed away, and my income changed, or I would have already just taken her to the vet. I know some people say why have the animal If you cannot afford her, but things happen. There was a day I could afford A VET! Who knows what life will bring you? I am ready to take from paying a bill, but have a feeling it will be much more then even that. A shame we cannot have her on our heath insurance. Thanks so much! I see it seems these posts are older and hope this is seen! Thanks for any input!!

Try a google search an how to express cat anal glands, warm water will not relieve the issue if it is in fact anal gland issues.

Hey Terri!

It sounds as if the anal glands may be infected - they well may rupture on you. You really need to get your cat into the tub so you can bathe and assess the area. If they have ruptured you will need to keep the area clean, which might mean flushing with warm water several times a day until the rupture heals.

Take your cat to the vet so they can clean out kitty's anal glands properly. All of my cats have to have this done at least 2 times a year, one every 3 months.

Are you supposed to use any special soap with the warm water, or just flush with water? I know some (most) soaps can aggravate a condition and no one mentioned it. Thanks so very much to those of you who take in the homeless creatures and/or offer safe, healthy home prepared foods and remedies online to those of us who cannot afford our own health care, let alone the vet.
