What Can Help 9 Year Old Boy With Recurring Cold Sores?

Posted by Cheryl (his Nan) (New South Wales, Australia) on 10/08/2015

9 yr old boy with outbreaks of 'school sores'

He has a "Sore Breakout "every now and again. Eats good variety of fresh veges and fruits. Drinks water and milk.. has fresh caught fish. is not a junk food child gets lots of our Australian sun very active but then has to stay home when he gets a outbreak.. I personally think it is cold sore as I used to get them and still do. Occasionally his mother has had the odd cold sore. Over the years currently using Betadine cream and it seems to work. I personally use vinegar when I get a tingle. but don't think he would cop this one.. don't believe that he is lacking for vitamins or minerals..

Any ideas or clues would be appreciated as it keeps him away from school for a few days each time... much to his disgust. Thankyou

Lemon Balm (Melissia Officials) (may have spelled wrong). You can grow it and wet and squeeze the leaves and place on the sores, or can make a tea from the leaves and drink it. Or you can get it in the capsules to take. That is a natural way of healing. Plus apple cider vinegar helps heal them, as well as Lysine, and a few other home remedies (google) The doctor can prescribe him Valtrex- if he's not too young for it, that stops them in their tracks if taken right when the tingling starts. and a day or two- if taken after the sore begins- rather than a week or more of suffering. There is also a very expensive ointment that is available. (with prescription) Acidy foods- such as oranges, strawberries may be irritating also.

Stress usually brings these on. And even the fear of getting one can cause stress. So, I would suggest to get something from the doctor appropriate for his 9 years.

Of course, yogurt (esp. greek yogurt) with live cultures is a good thing too- and may hold them off from coming on.

Check out L-Lysine on the web. Read Amazon reviews, etc. It's supposedly the bomb cure for cold sores.

I suspect something he is eating or drinking is triggering the cold sores. There's a lot of artificial ingredients and dye in candy and gum. One or more of those ingredients could be a trigger.

Artificial sweeteners, besides being in diet soda and diet foods is used in most chewing gum formulas these days. Artificial sweeteners are the biggest trigger of cold sores, besides viruses. Also, many brands of ice cream contain a huge amount of artificial ingredients.

I'd start looking there there first. I'd also be building up his immune system at the same time with vitamin C, garlic, echinacea and goldenseal.

If you live in or close to an area w/ lots of development, agriculture, and industry, it is highly likely that the fish are contaminated with a variety of environmental heavy metals and chemicals, especially in lowlands or watershed areas or large reservoirs where toxins can easily accumulate during the wet seasons. Mountain streams and headwaters away from dev/ag/ind may be considered safe fish consumption.

One more critical item for building immunity against infections is Zinc. A child would need only 25mg daily (away from fiber foods like fruits & veggies).
