What Could Cause Spasms and Tremors at Night?

Posted by John (Toronto) on 11/15/2018

Hello folks...I am 60 yr old male, never smoked, played tons of sports when I was younger etc. I am having the following issues the past 3 weeks

Stiff shoulder, pain at night that wakes me up and noticing a spasm/tremor. Internal tremor. Itchy ears, scalp.Twitch in upper lip.

I went to my GP yesterday and he just did a battery of blood work for thyroid, sugar etc and all normal.

Don't know whats going on and hoping its not something like Parkinson's??

Dear John,

Magnesium deficiency can cause some of the issues you are mentioning.

Natural Calm, taken at bedtime may be helpful. Or an Epsom Salt bath before bed. Those are my two favorite ways to get extra magnesium into my body.

John, our nerves are protected by a myelin sheath, which is made up of cholesterol. Drugs that inhibit cholesterol production could be the culprit, also the known neurotoxins in many foods and drinks. There are herbs that are nerve restorative, see link http://www.thehealersjournal.com/2013/04/01/6-powerful-herbs-for-rejuvenating-the-nervous-system/ (there's a lot of ads, just scroll down), coconut oil is also known to have nerve protective properties, magnesium should help with the aches and tics. Thiamine has helped Parkinson's patients, see Art's posts on Earth Clinic, and sufferers have had improvement with fermented papaya and homemade tincture of fava beans. (Google for info and studies) Good food sources of thiamine are nutritional yeast and liver.

John,
The shoulder pain always makes me think gallbladder, at least to start. So add in the itchy and tremors, add them together. Low potassium. Minerals in general.
Teds alkalinity drink is a good place to get potassium and boost the gallbladder. I whole lime, 6 to 8 tsp squeezed in a glass, add 1/2 tsp baking soda. Let fizz, add 1/2 glass of water and drink 2x a day, 1/2 hour after food. You could add 5 drops of magnesium oil to that and get your magnesium levels up. About 250mg 2x a day. 5 days out of 7.
You might rub some magnesium oil into the bottoms of your feet at night, before bed, so your lower body gets the enrichment also.
Itchy scalp, I would try a borax water rinse first, it resets your skin. after you wash your hair and rinse. 1 final rinse, that you leave in. borax water, 1 liter of spring water add 1/4 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax added, let stand one hour. Avoiding grains, pour some on hair or add to a spray bottle. rub in and leave it.
Another avenue to explore is low vitamin D. You can watch Dr Michael Holicks videos on You Tube or buy his book.

Was so glad to read your post and see the info on papaya and nutritional yeast for tremor and spasms. I have added both to my diet about 1 week ago. I have essential tremors, in my head and mostly left hand, and esophageal spasms. I had a cardiologist tell me that most every issue I have has to do with my nervous system. The papaya I started is specifically for my spleen, but it's other benefits are wonderful. I've learned so much on EC. The esophageal spasms are way less now, but my instant fix is room temp water. I am hoping to discover the cause of course, and maybe eliminate them. Nutritional yeast, to me, is wonderful on my scrambled eggs or omelettes, or I love it on my roasted veggies. Cheese causes me issues, and the NY really has helped me as a replacement. I am lucky to see the large Mexican Papaya at my local market, and one will last me a week in the fridge. I had no idea at this point, that I would also be helping my tremors with both remedies, so thank you again, Denise

Hi folks and thanks for the previous responses . It has been a couple weeks now since I started to get my sore shoulder, which comes and goes . I also noticed the last 2 months that my left index finger is sure possibly just attributed to arthritis as I see a bone spur on it but this never bothered me before. My issues are continuing with this kind of light body tremor/buzzing feeling . Comes and goes all day long and when I lay down at nite I can feel it through my body. Before relating it to stress or visit to my GP my blood work and thyroid /sugar test were all normal BUT the Thyroid test was not the gold standard where they measure everything not the standard hospital one. The reason I ask is that I have always had a slow heart rate in the 50's and also my temperature is usually around 96 degrees which apparently is a concern for Hypoglycemia. So im not sure whether that is an issue that is causing this. My concern as I am a worrier is that perhaps early Parkinsons….my walk is normal, not tripping etc, strength in arms and legs seem fine . So perhaps I do talk to my GP and perhaps a trip to the Neurologist will clear up any concerns as I read online that shoulder issues were pretty common as a first sign of parkinsons disease.

Also on the sugar side they did not give me the test where you drink a sugar drink then wait then get retested so im not sure how accurate anything else is

Also note that I do have moderate sleep apnea, im not on CPAP or anything but looking to get an oral mouthpiece so don't think that's contribuiting and only other health issue is I have Hiatial Hernia

I have no Gallbladder as I had that removed 2 yrs ago. Was sleeping last nite and woke at 3am with tremor in my shoulder /neck area. I notice when I sleep on my side with my head on the pillow I can hear and fell a slight buzzing frequency. When they did the Thyroid blood test at hospital and said it was normal and I have checked my body temperature upon waking the last 2 days and it has been 96.6 and 96 both days …..not sure if this has anything to do with it but I heard the Thyroid tests they use are useless

Hi John,

The next time you get shoulder pain try drinking a few gulps of dill pickle juice just to rule out gallbladder. Just a thought...
