What Remedies Can Help 13 Year Old Lab Who Lost Appetite?

Posted by Trishm (Ft. Worth, Texas) on 10/31/2017

Hello. We have a 13 yr. old female lab mix. She just recently lost her appetite, going on 2 weeks. I can coax her to eat one meal a day. She gets turmeric, and fish oil daily. I started the fish oil about 3 weeks ago when someone told me it was good for the keratosis she began to get. She's just not herself. Will castor oil help with her cataracts, almost deaf, and lack of appetite? If so how do I administer the castor oil for her situations?

Hey Trish,

The best advice I can offer is to take your dog to the vet for a diagnosis. Sudden changes in behavior warrant a vet visit, and with a senior a proper diagnosis is crucial in determining the next steps to ensure the comfort of your pet.

Taking your senior dog to the vet is a good idea. I too have senior pets and like humans, as they get older, things start to happen. I've had bad experiences with vets so even though I think taking a senior pet to the vet is a good idea, I always try home remedies first and most of the time they've worked. Have you checked your dog's teeth? My dog did the same thing as yours and it was his teeth. He got a dental and instead of everything being fine, I ended up with more problems. He ended up with cysts that would not heal. One cyst was on the back of his neck and the other on his rump...places where I thought he may have gotten a shot at the vet. While he still had the cysts, he got very, very ill. He threw up all his breakfast, was shivering and couldn't stand. He eats anything he can find out in the yard...bird poop, cat poop, etc. It's not that he's hungry, he gets home cooked meals all the time...lots of chicken and all kinds of vegetables. He gets people food as treats, no store dog treats. I thought it might be his stomach so I gave him home remedies for that. He was sick all morning and afternoon. I am also treating a cat with squamous cell carcinoma and give her Cell Forte and AHCC. After giving her these 2 supplements, she got her appetite back, gained weight and she's still with us. Since I had the Cell Forte and AHCC on hand, I thought I'd give my dog some.

11:00 am Threw up all he ate in morning.11:30 am Started fluids
1:00 pm Ate 1 teaspoon winter squash1:45 pm 1 (50mg) zinc5:00 pm 1 capsule Cell Forte.
6:00 pm 1 capsule AHCC.
7:30 pm 1 (50mg) zinc
9:15 pm 1 capsule Cell Forte

10:30 pm when I was fixing a snack for the other dog and cats, he came into the kitchen. He ate some chicken and more squash. His eyes were big and he was walking so I knew he was better.

11:15 pm AHCC12:15 pm Cell Forte12:30 pm Ate more chicken and squash

The next day, you would never know that he'd been so very, very sick. I really think the Cell Forte and AHCC helped. Another plus was that the cysts that he'd had for 4 months that kept draining, finally healed. I also gave him zinc so maybe that healed the cysts. My dog weighs 25#. About every hour I gave him about 1 ounce fluids (pediatric electrolyte) orally with a syringe without the needle. To the fluids I added about 1/3 dropper of colloidal silver. A couple of times I added about 1/4 teaspoon ACV to the fluids. He was too sick to take the capsules so I opened them up and dissolved them in the fluids. Don't remember if I added some liquid from the canned cat food to the fluids so he'd take it. He'll take anything if I add liquid from canned cat food. The Cell Forte and AHCC are not bad tasting....I always taste before giving them any supplements as some are very bitter and they would not take them out of the capsule. Do some research on these 2 supplements. I don't think I'll ever be without them.

As for the castor oil for cataracts, they say to put 1 drop of organic, cold pressed castor oil in each eye at bedtime. You can get organic castor oil at health food stores or online.
