How Can I Help a 2 /12 Year Old Dog with Liver Shutting Down?

Posted by Smokey (Yonkers, Ny) on 02/05/2016

My son's 2 1/2 yr old Chihuahua was not feeling well we were told that he has back problems and was given pain killer, blood work results came back: High liver counts, diet was changed, and the following week we went back for another blood work, results: liver shutting down. We are so devastated such a happy little fellow now can't hardly walk. Is there hope for this little 5 pound fellow? they want to do an MRI now. Is so costly and we feel that time is running out what can we do to give this little guy another chance in life?

Hi Smokey,

I'm new here, so I hope it's ok to recommend a supplement vs. kitchen cupboard remedies. My dog had high liver enzymes, and they aren't sure what is causing it, as he had stomach cancer. Anyway, I put him on a supplement called "Hepatica" . You can find it here for your wee one:

My dog doesn't like the flavor/odor, but I hide it in his wet food. I found I could give it to him once a day instead of twice, and he's doing very well. However he was not in liver failure, but was vomiting. Some liver supplements include SAM-e, but a lot of dogs have side effects (mine did), and this one does not have SAM-e in it.

You probably want to research diets as well. Most commercial food is very damaging to their health. There are good freeze dried raw diets and some canned food that are good. Dry kibble is like poison.

I wish you and your son well!!
