How Many Mg in 1 Tsp of Turmeric?

Posted by G (Buffalo, NY) on 12/30/2007

How many mg are in 1 tsp. of turmeric?' (I am using the spice/product I found on the shelf in the grocery store.) The recommended dosage I found on-line is 250 - 500 mg per day. How do I figure out the mg's? The label does not specify servings per container.

Sorry, I realize your question is 3 yrs old, but I just came across it. Per www.raysahelian.com, turmeric extract is 95% curcumin (active ingredient) so 250 mg contains 238 mg of curcumin. He also says that turmeric powder is 5% curcumin so 250 mg powder contains 12 mg of curcumin. I calculated 250 mg powder/12 mg curcumin x 238 mg curcumin dose = 5,000 mg (5 g) turmeric powder needed per dose. I measured 30 tsp in a 50 g jar of turmeric i.e.,6/10 tsp is 1 g. You need 5 g powder or 3 tsp to get the equivalent dose. I hope this helps!
